ISLAMABAD: A massive leak of secret files from a Panamanian law firm that specialises in offshore tax havens has revealed the often-murky financial wheelings and dealings of some of the world’s most powerful political players, such as Russia’s Vladimir Putin, the king of Saudi Arabia, Iceland’s prime minister and the family of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, among dozens of others.

In a data dump that is described as being larger than leaked US diplomatic cables, around 2.6 terabytes of information drawn from the internal database of Mossack Fonseca has been made public.

The data from the Panama Papers, available on the website of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists — one of around 100 news organisations and 300 journalists that worked on mining the data simultaneously — also reveals the offshore holdings of members of Prime Minister Sharif’s family.

According to documents available on the ICIJ website, the PM’s children Mariam, Hasan and Hussain “were owners or had the right to authorise transactions for several companies”.

Mariam is described as “the owner of British Virgin Islands-based firms Nielsen Enterprises Limited and Nescoll Limited, incorporated in 1994 and 1993”.

On one of the documents released by ICIJ, the address listed for Nielsen Enterprises is Saroor Palace in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The document, dated June 2012, describes Mariam Safdar as the ‘beneficial owner’.

According to ICIJ, “Hussain and Mariam signed a document dated June 2007 that was part of a series of transactions in which Deutsche Bank Geneva lent up to $13.8 million to Nescoll, Nielsen and another company, with their London properties as collateral.”

In July 2014, the two companies were transferred to another agent.

Hasan Nawaz Sharif is described as “the sole director of Hangon Property Holdings Limited incorporated in the British Virgin Islands in February 2007, which acquired Liberia-based firm Cascon Holdings Establishment Limited for about $11.2 million in August 2007”.

But the papers are not necessarily evidence of wrongdoing. According to The Guardian, using offshore structures is entirely legal.

“There are many legitimate reasons for doing so. Business people in countries such as Russia and Ukraine typically put their assets offshore to defend them from `raids’ by criminals, and to get around hard currency restrictions,” the paper said in an explanatory note.

Leaders such as the presidents of Ukraine, Argentina, UAE; as well as relatives of UK Prime Minister David Cameron, Syrian leader Bashaar al-Assad, a former Chinese PM, as well as the son of former UN chief Kofi Anan are also mentioned in the leaked documents. It is expected that the data leak will yield more information in days to come.

Nothing will change.... they will keep their positions. Very unfortunate.

adnan Apr 04, 2016 10:16am

It is legal, mates. Relax. There are no good reasons behind leaking these

xmaestro Apr 04, 2016 10:19am

Why am i not surprised?

babarjanno Apr 04, 2016 10:22am

our money used to buy offshore companies !!! NS should resign and give all the money to charity and come clean for next elections.

rehan Apr 04, 2016 10:24am

About time such leaders were exposed

Ahmed32 Apr 04, 2016 10:30am

Good going Sharifs! and mind you, this is just 1 leak. Will we ever get honest leaders?

shuaib Apr 04, 2016 10:30am

Bravo! our PM & his family tree has alot money and We are sure they will spend this money on the betterment of Pakistani people " April fool". Leader like Sir Imran khan could only dare to declare his assets and property online on PTI's website & in front of Journalist panel, The day will come when PM&Family will be brought to Justice Inshallah!

SMZ Apr 04, 2016 10:38am

after such strong evidence, our PM will enjoy the same authority and vote bank, No ethics by PM and his family

Media will not highlight to the extent with which it does for PPP

Democracy will be in danger as per ministers if we speak out for this mega scandal

No issue, please rule us as we are crowd of people not sensible nation

Ansir Apr 04, 2016 10:49am

If our PM has any integrity, he should step down until his name is cleared.

AJ Apr 04, 2016 10:51am

Why should we be surprised by these revelations?

NT Apr 04, 2016 10:54am

This is not necessarily corruption if Nawaz Sharif has declared these assets. However it is doubtful and in that case he will lose the moral authority to govern. He may survive the crisis but will be seriously weakened. The army is knocking at Punjab's doorsteps anyways which is very uncomfortable for him (http://www.nybooks.com/daily/2016/03/31/pakistan-lahore-bombing-army-steps-in/) But Nawaz Sharif has his spin doctor journalists the likes of Hamid Mir and Najam Sethi ready to go to work for him soon. The next few days will be interesting and very critical for all the Sharifs.

Anonymous K Apr 04, 2016 10:56am

I guess only the non-elite classes are bound to pay taxes on moral and enforced fronts. If the leaders set this sort of example, i cant really blame the rest of the populace.

Shahzaib Khan Apr 04, 2016 11:02am

RESIGNATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shahid Apr 04, 2016 11:03am

Please don't talk about these issues as Democracy will threatened

Riztiz Apr 04, 2016 11:07am

Shareef family is doing politics for business , so why to be shocked? Sorry of those who vote for them.

Zafar Apr 04, 2016 11:07am

I hope this news is sufficient for their supporters to realize that they can't be sincere to country. Don't vote PTI but at least don't get fooled by them over and over again.

Gerry D'Cunha Apr 04, 2016 11:09am

The rich families of a most poor country

Khan Apr 04, 2016 11:09am

The question is not whether it is within the law or not but what is the source of the money at the time of incorporation of companies in 1993-1994. To best of my recollection Hussain Nawaz was at university!!! So what work did he do that earned him millions??? Where did he get millions to buy the properties at that time??? What tax did he pay at the time???

Gramscian Apr 04, 2016 11:11am

So proud of Sharif family. They have made Pakistan famous. Salute you.

Shah Apr 04, 2016 11:13am

What more proofs are need for their corruption and loot. Are these politicians not a security risk???

Irfan Apr 04, 2016 11:13am

Corruption has got no limits. You steel a rupee and you are a thief. You steel billions and you will be the lion. The problem is our nation is sleeping in a deep slumber. Kindly don't try to wake us up.

Asad Apr 04, 2016 11:13am

We as Pakistani are most corrupt because most of us we know those who we vote r corrupt ... But we still choose them for our personal gain ...,,, for sure Pakistani nation does not deserve leader like imran khan

Ali Q Apr 04, 2016 11:14am

These are the leaders of the country. An absolute shame! and unfortunate for the us as a Pakistani. Hope the leaders and army of Pakistan show some character and stop abusing the country's resources and system. Pakistan needs to focus on education and healthcare system for every citizen irrespective of their income and status in the society. All these problems would automatically weed out. We will have to start with the land reforms like India did, immediately after independence.

Philosopher (from Japan) Apr 04, 2016 11:19am

No no they are clean like angels. Isn't???

Aqeel Apr 04, 2016 11:22am

Let's just assume the sharif family had it all for purely legal reasons. Why did they not include these in their supposedly "comprehensive" list of declared assets?

Hassan Aslam Apr 04, 2016 11:23am

Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif are an inspiration. There Children are running successful offshore businesses worth billions. While NS and SS are just too loyal to the POOR that they preferred to stay in this poverty stricken Country and kept helping POOR. Without any vested interest Afff-korse. God Bless Ordinary ones.

we dont need panama papers to tell us this everyone knows of the blatant corruption in our government and we dont care as usual

If a Pakistani citizen steals a leaf of bread from a bakery because he was so poor that his children did not eat for 3 days, the law of Pakistan comes into action ,arrest the person ,produce him to courts and punish him according to law perfectly.BUT when Nawaz Sharif and his all family and party robs all the money of Pakistan during his very long RULE and all the evidences are crystal the same law remains impotent ,we all Pakistanis protest and demand exact application of law of beloved Pakistan on Nawaz family party, and zardari including every person who robbed our country's money .

Javed Mirani Apr 04, 2016 11:24am

These tax cheats park their wealth abroad feel entitled to power at expense of tax payer. I understand both Nawaz and Zardari pay little to no tax. Only in Pakistan tax doger elected to power.

Muhammad iqbal Apr 04, 2016 11:33am

No breaking news. Who is going to ask about the source of incomes.

Dr Khan Apr 04, 2016 11:37am

Very Sad indeed to read this report. Imran Khan has been raising his voice for past several years on Shareef family wrong doings and about their assets abroad but important institutions failed to take any action. These rulers are getting richer every day when country's loan are rapidly increasing. ECP should take action against the Nawaz Shareef family and declare them unfit for being member of Parliament as they did not declare about these off shore companies and their assets before the 2013 election.

Letsdoit Apr 04, 2016 11:38am

Lets do this NAB, great opportunity to start the things in the true manner.

Aisha Apr 04, 2016 11:41am

In any other country even a lower minister would have resigned at these accusations. But in democratic Pakistan that is just asking too much.

Sohaib Apr 04, 2016 11:53am

@Aisha In a country where there is no law or laws are based on gender, caste and social status all is legal. Nothing will happen to these so called champions of democracy and ruling elites.

Gerry D'Cunha Apr 04, 2016 11:53am

imtiaz syed Apr 04, 2016 11:58am

Imran khan is a very truthful and directive person, he had told this long ago...

zahid khan Apr 04, 2016 11:58am

Offshore entities are legal. But having assets abroad and not declaring them in tax returns in Pakistan is illegal. Non disclosure of assets with election commission makes u ineligible to hold offices also. This is exactly the case here.

A. A. Apr 04, 2016 11:59am

Is anyone surprised?

Surya Kant Apr 04, 2016 12:00pm

So what, politicians also have a right to conduct their businesses

Abdulla Hussain Apr 04, 2016 12:03pm

Nawaz Sharif should come up with either categorical denial or acceptance. A country's PM has to be very transparent, honest & truthful.

Khurrum Khalid Apr 04, 2016 12:15pm

An independent inquiry commission should be setup to investigate the matter and if allegations are proved out to be correct then PML-N govt. should resign.

Noman Rasheed Apr 04, 2016 12:20pm

Illiterate and poor people of Pakistan won't understand this. They will still vote for Sharif family in next elections.

Changez_Khan Apr 04, 2016 12:21pm

The corrupts rule.

Mian Apr 04, 2016 12:25pm

@Aisha Because we have something called "Royal Democracy".So no one will feel any moral responsibility to resign.

naeem Apr 04, 2016 12:30pm

Shameful even by our standards :(

Irfan Apr 04, 2016 12:32pm

One more test of our supreme and sacred courts. We all know the result though.

kanwarch Apr 04, 2016 12:40pm

I think the Shareef family has all along denied any property deals abroad. I remember NS and his brother SS used to shout at the top of their voice regarding the surrey palace and now this. How can somebody get so greedy. They have got everything here in Pakistan but want to protect all the ill gotton wealth abroad forgetting that everything is going to stay here while they die one day.

S. Chatterjee Apr 04, 2016 12:43pm

OMG. It is unimaginable that they so called 'honest leaders' have been indulging such corruption. I thought Pakistan PM was honest but now observing different pole. At least Indian President or PM . It is shuddering to read that "Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s family, including three of his four children – Mariam, Hasan and Hussain – have a network of businesses such as steel, sugar and paper mills and extensive international property holdings. That is why there are so many poor people in Pakistan and terrorism is everyday's affairs.

Hammad Haider Apr 04, 2016 12:48pm

Imran should go all out after this issue, give a deadline for Nawaz's resignation till these charges are proven wrong and threaten another dharna in case Nawaz does not budge.

Having an off-shore account is not illegal.
Read the law before you post. What is not surprising is not one person from america is on it. Only their enemies, russia, china, etc

JFarasat Apr 04, 2016 12:57pm

SAB Apr 04, 2016 01:04pm

Mariam Nawaz or Mariam safdar has repeatedly denied having any property inside or outside Pakistan.

Salman Apr 04, 2016 01:06pm

Do you guys think a leaked document will change the fortune of PM today ? or even in the days to come ? I firmly believe the given document would lick the dust in couple of days while the whole episode would collapse into annuls of history, like before. We would hear conspiracy theories, white washing from government side while a furor can be expected from opposition corners as well - that is all . No lessons for any one , neither our voters would learn any thing nor those who are voted to power - Tomorrow is another day . No offence guys, but we Pakistanis (including myself) are rotten to core - nothing could change us , no mountains of corruptions would be enough to shake our belief in the people like our PM.

Khalid Latif Apr 04, 2016 01:14pm

Interesting reports by all, including the BBC. Why has the BBC never published about the same peoples' properties and investments in England? Obviously, the familie's unusual investments reached England, in the millions, if not billions, transferred to Britain; most likely, illegally. Is such unusal amount of money 's transfer to England in accordance with the British law?

Ideally, in a democratic setup, the opposition would have rallied public opinion against the corrupt ruling party. But, the opposition (such the PPP) is not particularly different...they have no moral authority and courage to do so...hence, status quo will continue.

Yes, it is legal to have offshore account.

No, it is illegal to not declare these accounts in front of the Election Commission. Therefore, there is no basis of him standing in election becoming a PM.

AA Apr 04, 2016 02:56pm

Although I hate PMLN but this report only proves that he has 2 properties in England, which everyone already knows of and he had to get a loan to purchase his property in jeddah. This shows he didn't have enough money to buy the saudi property...I was expecting the company would have a billion dollars in it...

MAH Apr 04, 2016 02:58pm

Having these accounts might be legal, but the question is how legal are the sources of these funds?

Muhammed Ali UK Apr 04, 2016 03:02pm

Modi responds Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has vowed to crack down on the “menace” of so-called black money— vast sums stashed abroad to keep them secret from Indian tax authorities.

When will Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's government issue such statement??

Tahir Lone Apr 04, 2016 03:30pm

So the Shareef's are paying less than 50k rupees each income tax.. i pay more than this in 1 month in the UK.

with such honest people in power, no wonder we will take more and more IMF loans and run to London. Big shame for Pakistan

Tahir Lone Apr 04, 2016 03:31pm

Mian Apr 04, 2016 03:32pm

SAB Apr 04, 2016 03:44pm

Robert Barrington from Transparency International UK says:

The Panama Papers seem to confirm the evidence from elsewhere that the world’s corrupt elite are gaming the international financial system to launder and protect their stolen wealth.

The only way to stop this grand corruption is through governments, businesses and others coming together and rejecting dirty cash as illegitimate. The time has come to stop turning a blind eye to anonymous purchases of luxury property and goods, refuse to issue unvetted investment visas and create a legal framework that is fit for purpose in detecting flows of dirty cash.

The prime minister’s anti-corruption summit in May is the perfect opportunity to address these issues, but will only do so if the agenda is ambitious and those who are complicit in grand corruption are not allowed into the room to torpedo effective action.

N Apr 04, 2016 03:51pm

@Round them up this is not necessary corruption as they have already declared their asset s and this is legal .do you think one of the top businesses man or any business man would only earn from one way .look at Chinese business man ,they earn by investing in different countries .same is the case with nawaz Sharif .and this leak is not something illegal .do u have any proof that this the countries money .he may be investing the money he earned through his own business which was well established even before 1947.know some common sense

Abbas naqvi Apr 04, 2016 04:04pm

Amassing wealth is not recommended in our religion. You should share what you have with those who are deprived and downtrodden. This is the teaching of Islam. However, power corrupts no matter how pious you are. Political leaders who rise from within the common masses can feel the pain of those that they have lived with. It is the spirit of serving the people and the state that leads popular leaders to set examples of good governance. Our political system needs to become clean and transparent to produce leaders of integrity and moral standing to serve their people.

Khurram Waqas Apr 04, 2016 04:05pm

@N Offshore companies have two distinct features 'Secrecy' & 'Tax Evasion'. The question should be what was the need of secrecy if the they are buying assets out of their own cash? If you hold the highest public office you are accountable to public as those 'shell companies' can conduit proceeds of kick backs and corruptions as well.

Ahmed Apr 04, 2016 04:10pm

Rich leaders of poor nation. They should have used their money to develop institutions in the country. Proves they dont live for the people of Pakistan. This is sheer lack of patriotism-which simply means: love for the fellow country men.

Nation Apr 04, 2016 04:19pm

As the article rightly said having a Bank Account in a foreign country or money or being a Director or Shareholder of a company or Trust no way makes a person corrupt. People doing business globally or providing services or even touring on a regular basis can certainly have accounts in foreign countries. PM Sharif has large scale legitimate business in Pakistan and globally can certainly have bank account.

This is another attempt of sensationalising raw information without doing proper homework. Such news or information makes more damage than good. It would have been better to investigate the money trail and conclude with proof about the wrong doing. It would have been better to publish the trail of money right from where it was generated without giving a chance to the accused to defend or destroy the evidences.

This news will also die natural death in few days like all previous news

Having assets abroad is NOT illegal but trying to circumvent paying taxes where those are due is unacceptable. Also, using political influence to get special favors for investment is WRONG and in some cases counter to national interest. So far no proof of that.

Shahid Apr 04, 2016 04:31pm

A 'poor' country full of poor masses and its 'rich' rulers begging bowls in hand for more aid and borrowing more monies in the name of poor masses? For what? Hoarding wealth away to void taxes? Casting ever wider tax net to bring more of the locals into the Tax net? What happened to morality? Do you need such rulers? Think hard about it.

Rex Minor Apr 04, 2016 04:34pm

you are a dreamer Sir? There is nothing illegal for the non residents to hold assets in offshore countries to minimise tax liabilities or to avoid sanction regimes, the question however needs answering is why such a secrecy about it ?

ZAHIID S ALI Apr 04, 2016 06:55pm

The whole lot are a bunch of crooks, including all the other politicians. To best of my knowledge Mr Musharraf is above all of these bandits.

jabbar khan Apr 04, 2016 07:03pm

I live in Island and the Prime minister has been in Panama papers and every one knows that his days are numbered. In other European countries these are seen as very serious allegations and many people will have to answer otherwise they will see themselves in jail. I am surprised in republic of Pakistan no one cares.

Nuh Apr 04, 2016 07:56pm

SO WHAT!! Much ado about nothing!

ABDUL MUQTADIR Apr 04, 2016 08:06pm

The question is "What they did is illegal?" If yes try them They took advantage of the laws that allows it.

GAK Wazir Apr 04, 2016 08:53pm

Nothing will happen. The rulers will do whatever they want. Almost every one is corrupt but some are less and others more. How will this blessed country make progress and the people will be prosperous if such new scandals occur. Let the NAB take notice of the Panamian Leaks and conduct thorough investigation to determine whether PPP is only corrupt or the current leadership is not free from the scourge or ailment.

Hassan Parvez Apr 04, 2016 09:39pm

@adnan which world are you living in? It becomes illegal when it is not declared in income tax returns. Also how the money was transferred offshore to acquire these assets? was it done legally by obtaining permission from state bank of Pakistan through proper banking channels or through money laundering which this family has been doing for a long time.

Hassan Parvez Apr 04, 2016 09:41pm

@SMZ 100% in agreement with your comment.

Prashantjain Apr 04, 2016 10:28pm

IN today's world no one is 100 percent perfect, main thing is what head of the state is delivering to the nation,if nation is progressing than what's wrong. We should trust our leaders.

Qasim Shah Apr 04, 2016 11:14pm

It is only tip of ice-berg many other assets are hiding in other places like Saudia.

azizullah kumbher Apr 04, 2016 11:16pm

An independent inquiry commission should be setup to investigate the matter and if allegations are proved out to be correct then meyna botheran govt. should resign.

Dr. Salaria, Aamir Ahmad Apr 04, 2016 11:39pm

Corruption, corruption everywhere but no one has the guts and the grit to admit it in Islamabad.

Naz Apr 05, 2016 12:39am

amir Apr 05, 2016 08:51am

One Citizen. Apr 05, 2016 11:42am

Those in power wish others to invest in Pakistan, wish others to pay their taxes, wish others to be transparent with their wealth, wish others to keep their money here in Pakistan. In an impoverished country like ours, for those in power to keep their money in offshore accounts confirms, not to invest in Pakistan, do not pay your taxes, do not be transparent with your wealth, keep your money in offshore accounts like those in power do. This is the message for us the common citizens of Pakistan from those in power, as the saying goes, setting an example is not one way of making others do what you want, it is the only way.

freed Apr 05, 2016 12:11pm

Its legal to hide assets in Pakistan in offshore accounts. No one is asking who made these laws and why laws are not being changed?

kanwarch Apr 05, 2016 03:11pm

Where there is corruption, NS and family is in the fore-front. Just look at their tax returns for the last 60 years and just look at the national resources being spent to protect this family. Not appropriate.

P. S. Natarajan Apr 05, 2016 03:37pm

A painful elaboration of the obvious !

m h kayani Apr 05, 2016 04:08pm

wake up you Pakistani, eliminate the corruption NOW

Asif Apr 05, 2016 07:09pm

Tell us something that we do not know!

Mukhtar Chandio Apr 05, 2016 08:34pm

It's a conspiracy against Russia, China and Pakistan. Be aware !

omair Apr 05, 2016 08:35pm

Even if the offshore companies are legit, the invested money is all white, my question is, on what moral ground can NS ask the world to invest money into pakistani economy when his children are investing offshore? interesting to see how he could invite global investor into pakistan.. :)

AMIR AHMAD Apr 05, 2016 08:48pm

No Surprise...

Maher USA Apr 05, 2016 09:24pm

Mustafa R. Apr 05, 2016 09:43pm

Did Nawaz Sahib fill out his papers properly with the election commission in 2013? You are required to list your properties.

Mustafa R. Apr 05, 2016 09:51pm

Nothing new, Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri has disclosed most of it two years ago.

malik Apr 05, 2016 11:05pm

One Citizen. Apr 06, 2016 03:31pm

@Ansir . One big IF!!!

Mohammed Apr 07, 2016 05:08am

Owning off shore companies is not illegal, to protect your privacy and reduce your tax bill, in the UK this can be done in one off 2 ways. 1, by having a UK based company which would minimise your tax bill perfectly legal but will not protect your privacy. 2 is to have an offshore company in a tax haven, this will further reduce your tax bill and protect your privacy. The Panama papers do not prove any wrongdoing of the names listed, only these individuals own company's.
The real issue here is of transparency, so the question is why would government official's and PM need this level of secrecy. There is no need to have any type of investigation that people have no trust in, however there is a solution to prove their innocence. To provide a power of eternity to the people of Pakistan, so they may seek information from the relevant authorities all over the world to disclose information. SIMPLE .
