SRINAGAR, Nov 12: Five people were killed in Kashmir including a pro-India political worker, while a civilian was injured when Indian and Pakistani troops traded fire, police said on Wednesday.

Police said two or three suspected militants barged into the house of Mohammed Afzal Bhat in the village of Kanipora near Kulgam town, 70km from here, and shot him dead late Tuesday.

Mr Bhat was a worker of the Communist Party of India-Marxist, which supports the ruling coalition in Kashmir.

He is the sixth worker of a party favouring Indian rule to have been killed by suspected militants since Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed completed one year in office on November 2.

Meanwhile, Indian troops shot dead two militants in overnight clashes in the southern districts of Pulwama and Anantnag, a police spokesman said.

He claimed that one of the slain militants was a Pakistani and the other was a local member of Jaish-i-Mohammed.

A Kashmiri working with the Indian army was killed on Wednesday when militants opened fire on raiding troops in the northern Kupwara district. An army officer and two soldiers were injured in the shootout, the spokesman said. In the same district Indian troops shot dead a militant overnight, police said.

A civilian was injured and 13 houses damaged when Indian and Pakistani troops traded mortar and artillery fire across the Line of Control in the Karna sector, police said.—AFP
