KARACHI: Karachi University awarded honorary doctoral degrees to two sitting members of its syndicate on Wednesday, ignoring strong criticism over the issue by a section of KU teachers.

The degrees were awarded to Haji Hanif Tayyab and Sardar Yasin Malik at a ceremony held at Governor House.

Appreciating their services, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan, who is also chancellor of Karachi University by virtue of his post, said the honorary degrees were being awarded following a unanimous decision of the university syndicate.

“Both individuals have served society well in many different ways and it’s a happy moment that we are acknowledging their work through this honour,” he said.

Haji Tayyab had played an important role in interfaith harmony while Sardar Malik had delivered remarkable services for the poor, especially in situations where the government had limited resources, he added.

Haji Tayyab and Sardar Malik in their brief speeches thanked the chancellor and the KU and highlighted how they took initiatives to benefit society.

KU vice chancellor Dr Mohammad Qaiser also spoke.
