ISLAMABAD: A division bench of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday issued notices to the Election Commission of Pakistan and attorney general on a petition filed by PTI against the recent elections of mayor and deputy mayor of Islamabad.

Petitioner Ali Nawaz Awan of the PTI stated that the incumbent government amended the procedure for holding the elections for the post of mayor and deputy mayor by promulgating an ordinance.

The plea further stated that the ordinance was promulgated to hold the elections of three deputy mayors and mayor at the same time, whereas, the petition pointed out, the elections on these positions could not be held simultaneously.

It demanded that separate procedure for electing both the representatives should be restored.

The petition further contended that the authorities had illegally decided to amend the ordinance.

The IHC division bench comprising Justice Noorul Haq N. Qureshi and Justice Aamir Farooq after hearing the arguments issued notices to the respondents and adjourned the matter for a date to be fixed by the registrar office.
