Ex-Guantanamo detainee seeks $10.4m

ISLAMABAD, Nov 4: Mohammad Sagheer, a Pakistani citizen, who was taken to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for investigation by the US but was released afterwards, has filed a suit for damages in Islamabad’s civil court, seeking a compensation of $10.4 million.

His counsel, Mohammad Ikram Chaudhry, told a news conference that the senior civil judge would take up the case for preliminary hearing on November 18.

The petitioner has impleaded US secretary of state, secretary defence, secretary law and the justice department as well as the government of Pakistan through the ministry of interior as respondents.

Mohammad Sagheer stated that he was on a tableeghi visit to Afghanistan when he was arrested and after keeping him in different jails in Afghanistan the US authorities shifted him to the Guantanamo Bay.

He said he was badly treated during the custody. The episode, during which, he said, he came close to losing his life a number of times, had caused him great financial loss and he should be compensated with $10.4 million.
