PESHAWAR, Dec 28: Lower Dir District government announced 15 per cent cut in public transport’s fares on Friday, to provide relief to commuters.

The reduction will be effective immediately till the provincial transport authority notifies new fares fixation.

The fares were revised down in a meeting, presided over by District Nazim Dr Mohammad Yaqoob Khan, at Nazim Secretariat. District Coordination Officer Ghulam Farooq Khan, Superintendent Police Mohammad Yamin Khan and representatives of all the transport unions of the district attended the meeting.

The Nazim said the government would safeguard the rights and interests of every section of the society. He said the people deserved to be given a concession in fares after about 30 per cent cut in petroleum prices.

Dr Yaqoob directed the authorities concerned to take measures for getting removed folding seats from public transport which created unbearable hardships for passengers during journey. He also asked the authority to get installed proper seats in pick-ups plying in the district to facilitate the journey.

The district Nazim also told transporters to avoid carrying passengers beyond the vehicles capacity and desist from over speeding.

He assured the transporters that their problems would also be taken up with the authorities soon.
