110 motions disposed of in 30 minutes

LAHORE, Oct 30: The boycott of Punjab Assembly proceedings by the opposition on Thursday came as a blessing in disguise for the speaker who disposed of an unprecedented 110 adjournment motions during the next 30 minutes.

On a normal day, one adjournment motion takes 10 to 15 minutes to be disposed of or referred to any house committee after questions and counter-questions. Given 30-minute time for the motions, no more than two or three of them are dealt with.

But it was an entirely different ballgame on Thursday after the opposition walked out of house in protest against the arrest of PML-N leader Javed Hashmi. The speaker rushed through motions, all but three by the opposition members, during the next 30 minutes at a breathtaking speed. The hurry with which the speaker read the motions can be gauged from the fact that he even missed the presence of a female treasury member and marked her absence to dispose of maximum number of adjournment motions. The lady belatedly pointed herself out and the speaker reverted back to let her speak on her motion.

Later the speaker adjourned the house till 9am Friday.
