Flood waters swirl in south India even as rain eases

NEW DELHI: Tens of thousands of people are crowding into government-run relief camps in southern India's Tamil Nadu state, as floods continue to swirl despite a respite from days of relentless rains.
By late morning Friday, state capital Chennai has seen scant rain for almost 24 hours. Local residents are still complaining bitterly that their homes remain inundated and help from the government is absent.
Access to the region remains closed with the main airport still shut and rail tracks flooded.
The Indian Meteorological Department scaled down a forecast for very heavy rains but adds that more rain or thunderstorms are likely.

I was stuck at Chennai airport for 2 days with no network to communicate with relatives. There was water all around airport but I felt that I was lucky to be in airport perimeter than outside as lot of help was available there.

this is realy due to environmental disaster! man interfering with nature and build infra structure obstructing natural wtaer ways and filling up lakes in urban india! the rains faced is unprecedented and highest in the last 100years. 118 cms. in one month!? lesson for all! so far 300 lives lost in the state of tamilnadu

Michael Crichton's "Jurassic park" is a novel set in science fiction...what happens if man interferes with Nature in a big way? Nature hits back in a big way.
Though it is a compulsive novel, a fiction, it touches on rather very philosophical questions? Much like stem cell research or cloning, and the dilemmas around it?
And, these "extreme weather conditions" portends of grave consequences of meddling with global weather by warming the globe through human activity.
A siren wake up call, really?
I am devastated that my beautiful Madras, ( that is the name by which I choose to remember) of countless beautiful memories, , is suffering so much?;(:(

@Aman Chennai is a huge metro with diverse population. Many people don't even know their neighbors. These floods actually made them united then ever before. And in conservative society like southern India, people don't show affection in public, these floods made them realise their mistake

Yes Nature caused huge floods and devastation. But humanity won in Chennai as it always does in Chennai India.
Mosques, Hindu temples, Churches, Gurudwaras opened their doors and served every one without consideration for religion. Muslims, Hindus, Christians and every one helped each others with selflessness. That is how India shined despite the adversity and Chennai's resilience is phenomenal.
