KARACHI, Oct 29: Liaquatabad Town Nazim Dr Pervaiz Mehmood has expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in his town and asked the adviser to chief minister on home affairs, Aftab Ahmed Shaikh, to take appropriate steps to control it.

In a letter to the adviser, Dr Pervaiz said that police and other law enforcement agencies were not playing their positive role in controlling criminal activities in the jurisdiction of town.

He referred to a few incidents of crime, including the kidnapping for ransom of local trader, Khalid Mubeen; murder of Asif Daddan and Naved Murtaza; besides the killing of three people near Firdous shopping centre. He said that the police had failed to trace the killers as well as the kidnapped trader so far.

He pointed out that the anti-extortion ordinance promulgated by the governor was not being implemented in the town. Some unscrupulous elements had been extorting money on the pretext of Zakat and Fitra from shopkeepers, market associations, and pushcart holders and the area police were least bothered to take action.

Dr Pervaiz claimed that criminals were snatching cash, mobile phones from men and jewellery from women in broad day light while incidents of house robberies were also on the rise.

He alleged that the police used to ask politically influential people before taking any action against criminals. Moreover, he alleged that town and UC Nazims were threatened of dire consequences if they intervened into any matter.

He asked the adviser on home affairs to take steps to improve the law and order situation.
