Bangladesh's Shakib banned for abusing umpire

DHAKA: Star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was handed a one-match ban Friday over a double foul-mouthed outburst during the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Twenty20 competition.

Shakib, who has a history of disciplinary problems, was found guilty of uttering abusive language after dismissing Sylhet Super Stars batsman Dilshan Munaweera while playing for his Rangpur Riders team on Thursday.

He was also convicted of directing offensive and abusive language towards umpire Tanvir Ahmed in the 13th over of Sylhet's innings when an appeal against rival batsman Mushfiqur Rahim was turned down.

Shakib, who was also fined around $250 on Friday, was suspended by the Bangladesh Cricket Board for six months last year for a “severe attitude problem” although the punishment was later reduced after he apologised.

He also received a three-match ban in 2014 after making a lewd gesture towards a cameraman during a one-day international against Sri Lanka.

The 28-year-old, who is the number one all-rounder in Test and ODI rankings, was also fined 30 per cent of his match fee after a bust-up with Pakistani bowler Wahab Riaz during a Test match earlier this year.

The third edition of the BPL began last weekend, resuming after the 2013 competition was marred by a match-fixing scandal.

@Lahore: no, that's a lot of money in Pakistan, not in Bangladesh. For $1.00, you get Rupee 106.00 but a Bangladeshi gets Taka 77.00 only. There are whole bunch of Pakistani players playing in the BPL, this year, therefore, the fines is kept low so that they find it too much to afford.

@shahjahan Do some economics ABC. A country's currency has nothing to do with economy. Countries suppress the strength of their currency due to various factors.Do some research. If you want to compare where Bangladesh stands against Pakistan look at PPP (Purchasing power parity) and GDP. Bangladesh has always lagged behind Pakistan despite Pakistan. Unfortunately Bangladeshi cricket has shown some examples of arrogance and lack of sportsmanship recently on the cricket field and in the spectators section of the stadiums. Ramiz Raja rightly said that our Bengali brothers need to work on their attitude. Anyhow best of luck to the rapidly emerging Bangladeshi cricket.

@Shadman Don't forget Bangladesh has not faced sanctions like Pakistan nor is US trying to get control of your country in the geo political scenario of the sub-continent. Still, we survive, have one of the best military, and continue to surprise the world with our resilience, have more purchasing power than you guys and much more political say around the world than you folks. @Ajay ladkani Thats kind of the point he was making you know. Besides, Pakistan gets all four seasons, better fruit and crop (Punjab), better lifestyle. Regardless of currency rate, its only good if your citizens have a good lifestyle. Despite having massive corruption in Pakistan and Benglais being very enterprising and business minded, theres no doubt who enjoys the better lifestyle.

Sakib has been my fav cricketer from BD. But if he corrects his behavior he can earn respect for himself too. Notice that apologizing to reduce his sentence and then doing it again means he is not serious enough to change his attitude. This time do not accept his apology. And Saqib concentrate on cricket. And earn respect by respecting others. Thanks.
