SRINAGAR, Oct 27: A strike marking the anniversary of the arrival of Indian troops in Kashmir closed most shops and businesses in the main city on Monday, as authorities said they had killed a leader of Mujahideen.
Saif-u-Rehaman Bajwa, military chief of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen died in an overnight shootout in Srinagar, police chief Gopal Sharma said.
Srinagar was closed for the latest strike against Indian rule, called by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, to mark the “black day” when Indian troops arrived in 1947.
INDIAN SOLDIER KILLED: An Indian soldier was killed in a gunbattle with Mujahideen in occupied Kashmir overnight, an army source said in Jammu on Monday.
The firefight erupted when soldiers at a checkpost tried to stop three Mujahideen in a jeep at the Akhnoor bridge, 25 kilometres west of Jammu late on Sunday.
The three freedom fighters, who were dressed in police uniforms, opened fire as one of the soldiers approached the vehicle to verify their identities, the source said. The soldier died on the spot.
The Mujahideen then entered some buildings in the nearby Ambaram More army camp where Indian soldiers were on Monday morning trying to flush them out, the source said.—Agencies
