PESHAWAR, Oct 26: The differences between the city district Nazim Azam Afridi and union council members widened as the newly formed opposition group decided to file a requisition for convening the district council session.

The dissident group led by UC Nazim Arbab Tariq held a meeting here on Saturday night to formulate its line of action and mount pressure on the city district government to accept their demands.

Deputy opposition leader Anwarul Hassen advocate claimed that some 30 members including two women councillors Shazia Tehmas and Fakhrun Nisa attended the meeting.

He said that the opposition group would file a requisition within next two days to convene the council’s session.

He claimed that 40 male and female members had joined the opposition group in the district council.

Under section 5 (2) of the Model bylaws, 2001, requisition for convening a session requires signatures of 25 per cent of the total membership of the council. Section 5(3) envisages that the convener after receiving the requisition shall convene the meeting after seven days. The total strength of the Peshawar city district council is 124.

The opposition members accused Azam Afridi of promoting nepotism and politicizing the district government affairs.

Angry councillors demanded that city district Nazim Azam Afridi should provide development funds and implement all resolutions, passed by the council.

Meanwhile 14 Nazims of Town-I affiliated with Awami National Party have decided to remain neutral in the ongoing tussle between District Nazim and the newly created opposition group.

A meeting which was held here on Sunday and presided over by Islamuddin decided that the ANP affiliated group would sit in the district council session in their independent capacity.
