ISLAMABAD: In an unprecedented move, Vice Chancellor (VC) of Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) has decided to take charge as the dean of natural sciences as well.

In the past, vice chancellors used to give acting charge to a senior faculty member in the absence of a dean.

However, the current VC has decided to take on the role himself after the retirement of the dean of natural sciences, until another one is appointed.

After reaching the age of superannuation, the dean of natural sciences, Prof Dr Zakaulla, retired on Wednesday. On the same day, Vice Chancellor Javed Ashraf decided to hold the post himself.

The acting registrar QAU, Dr Safia Ahmed, told Dawn that rules allowed the VC to hold the position of dean of a faculty temporarily, adding that a notification for the appointment of a new dean will be issued after the chancellor’s approval.

She said: “Following the rules, we gave some names to the chancellor’s office and we are now waiting for approval.”

According to QAU Act, 1973, “The dean of each faculty shall be appointed by the Chancellor [President of Pakistan] from amongst three senior most professors in the faculty”.

It provides yet more proof that the undergirding logic of public authority in Pakistan is legal and extra-legal coercion rather than legitimised consent.
