Pakistan’s former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq on Wednesday agreed on a two-year contract to coach Afghanistan, following the team’s impressive show in Zimbabwe, ESPNcricinfo reported.

Before Afghanistan’s departure to Zimbabwe, Inzamam had agreed to coach the Afghan side on a temporary basis.

During its tour to the African country, Afghanistan, for the first time in their cricketing history against a Test playing nation, clinched both the one-day and T20 series.

“I spoke to Inzamam and he has accepted a two-year contract with the Afghanistan team which will do them a lot of good,” Kabir Khan, the former Afghanistan coach, was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India.

“Inzamam is satisfied with what he saw in Zimbabwe and believes that the Afghanistan team has good cricket talent and can move ahead.”

Kabir is currently performing his duties as a national selector in Pakistan. He said that Inzamam’s cricketing acumen would benefit the Afghan side.

“Inzamam is a cricket great and he can do a lot to improve their batting standards,” Kabir said.

“And his calibre and stature is such he will remain above any petty politics which have hurt Afghanistan cricket.”
