TIMERGARA: Jamaat-i-Islami MNA from Swat Ayesha Syed has asked the women councillors to get united for their rights. She was addressing a training workshop for women councillors at Balambat here on Monday.

Women from district, tehsil and village councils belonging to all political parties attended the workshop.

Ms Syed informed the participants about the newly introduced local government system in the province which, she said, had empowered the women councillors to play their due role in development process.

She said the JI women wing had been active in raising awareness among women about their role in social development. She claimed the JI was the only political party struggling for the women’s rights. “The JI fully backs women struggle for their rights,” she said, but added women should have confidence and courage to fight for their rights.

The JI lawmaker said the party had never banned women from voting.

BOMB DEFUSED: The security forces and Lal Qilla Maidan police on Monday defused a remote controlled bomb fitted to a pressure cooker near a private school at Darro village.

The school watchman found a suspicious bag near the school gate, and informed the school administration, which contacted the local police and security forces.

The Bomb Disposal Squad personnel reached the spot and defused the device weighing eight kilograms. The explosives were packed in a pressure cooker with a timer.

Training workshop held for women councillors

The Lal Qilla naib nazim Engineer Hanifullah and elders awarded the BDS officials with Rs50,000 cash prize for timely defusing the bomb.

BRIDGE INAUGURATED: The district development advisory committee chairman Saeed Gul on Monday opened work on the Markhanai Bridge in Maidan area.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, he said the provincial government was committed to developing backward and neglected areas.

The DDAC chairman said work on the bridge would start soon costing Rs60 million. He said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had given approval of different development projects in the militancy hit Maidan area.

He said different road and water supply projects had been approved by the government and work on them would start soon.

ROAD BEING BUILT ON SELF-HELP BASIS: PPP Senator Ahmad Hassan Khan has said both the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments have failed to bring any positive change in the lives of the people of the district.

He was addressing a public meeting at Lajbok on Monday after inaugurating construction of Mandi-Manzai road which is being built by local people on self-help basis.

Former district councillor Mohammad Zaman has donated Rs1.7 million from his own pocket for the project.
