KARACHI, Oct 22: The city government has started the remaining construction work worth Rs50.5 million on the Liaqatabad flyover, including the at-grade roads which is expected to be completed within six months.
City Nazim Naimatullah Khan, who inaugurated the project on Wednesday, speaking on the occasion said the flyover was one of the projects inherited by the city government from the previous administrations.
The planning started in 1990 and the construction work began in 1995, but project could not be completed.
ILLEGAL HYDRANTS: The Nazim has, under Section 144, imposed a ban on provision of water from illegal hydrants on Nishter Road.
This was announced by a spokesman for the city government on Wednesday. He said the ban had been imposed to save the roads in the area from erosion, and also because underground water is injurious to health.
A ban has also been imposed on the lifting of ‘reti’ and ‘bajri’ within the city limits under Section 144. There is also a ban on the movement of heavy vehicles from 7am to 9am and from 6pm to 8:30pm.
The ban on bathing in the sea, fishing, selling of fish and preparation of fish meal in the coastal areas of Clifton has also been extended for one more week under Section 144.
QURAN INSTITUTE: “Women who are aware of the teachings of Holy Quran always remain very successful in their practical life,” the city Nazim said during his visit to the Quran Institute here.
He said the city government was making efforts for provision of facilities to women at every level and establishment of a women’s university and some other projects were under consideration.
Ms Abida Nasarullah informed the Nazim of the courses being offered at the Quran Institute.
PRICES IN RAMAZAN: To provide cheap and quality edibles to people the city government has taken a number of steps which will be effective from the 1st of Ramazan.
A meeting held in this regard was told that in addition to the 140 Bachat bazaars already established in different parts of the city, 32 more were being established for provision of edibles items on cheap prices that would continue from the 1st of Ramazan till Eidul Fitr.
Presided over by DCO Mir Hussain Ali, the meeting was attended by EDO enterprise and investment promotion department, Rashid Akram Baig, the deputy director food department Sindh and representatives of different associations of traders and wholesalers.
The DCO said that provision of quality and hygienic edible items would be ensured, and asked traders to refrain from selling unhygienic items.
He urged that they should avoid overcharging and reduce the prices of different edible items in the holy month. With the cooperation of traders, he said, the city government would try to extend maximum relief to the people.
The DCO told the meeting that special teams would be constituted to keep a check on prices. He directed traders to display price-lists at their shops to avoid problems.
The president of the Pakistan Floor Mills Association said that the 10-kgs bag of flour would be available at Rs100 at the Bachat bazaars during Ramazan. The president of the Karachi Grocery Wholesalers Group promised that pulses would be available at 20 to 25 per cent reduced prices.—PPI
