PESHAWAR, Oct 21: The sustainable development of agriculture sector is vital for the socio-economic development and well being of the people, particularly the resource poor rural masses.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) and its various agreements poses many challenges and opportunities for the world in general and the developing countries in particular.

These views were expressed by the speakers at a seminar arranged by Technology Transfer Institute, Tarnab and Social Sciences Division of PARC at the Government Postgraduate College of Commerce, Thana-Malakand Agency on Monday.

In his presentation on WTO’s effect on Pakistan’s agriculture, Tehsil Nazim of Malakan Jamal Khan said that with the creation of the WTO, numerous threats and challenges have emerged and our farmers have to produce more competitively in order to stay in the world market.

Dr. Abdul Hayee Qureshi, Incharge of WTO Cell PARC, highlighted that WTO agreements deserved special attention of all the stakeholder in general and fruits and vegetables in particular.

Dr. Qureshi highlighted the need to develop low cost technological package for making the exportable commodities competitive. Director TTI Tarnab Shaukat Hayat Saddozai said WTO would offer technical assistance and training for the developing countries.—APP
