HARIPUR, Oct 19: Majority of the Haripur tehsil council members on Saturday reposed confidence in the tehsil Nazim by endorsing the proceedings of the last session.

The tehsil council met for the first time after a no-trust motion was moved against the tehsil Nazim on October 2. The session was presided over by convener Amin Khan Badhora.

Out of 57, only seven members turned up to cast their votes on the no-trust motion amid a boycott by the opposition and the Nazim group. Only two councillors cast their votes in favour of the no-trust motion.

When the session commenced on Saturday, tehsil Nazim Iftikhar Ahmad Khan sought an endorsement of the last session’s proceedings. Sheikh Abid of the opposition presented a letter issued by the deputy secretary of the Local Council Board, Peshawar, to the convener, and said after this letter the entire exercise on the no-confidence move had become redundant and valueless so its endorsement carried no weight.

The deputy secretary in his letter stated: “The alleged internal recall motion stated to have been rejected, does not effect the exercise of right of vote of the members of the tehsil council for internal recall of tehsil Nazim, if they so desire.”

However, when pressed by members, the convener called for voting through a show of hand on the matter. Twenty-five members supported the tehsil Nazim by endorsing the result of the no-trust motion in the last session, while 19 opposed the last session’s proceeding.

Through another resolution moved by Hakim Ibrar the dissolution of all the five standing committees was sought and Riasat Khan, Naib Nazim union council Dingi, demanded a ban on discharge of industrial effluent from Hattar Industrial Estate into open streams, and installation of a treatment plant.
