KARACHI: A woman believed to be dead 'came back to life' on Monday when Edhi mortuary staff were bathing her body prior to burial.
Edhi Foundation spokesman Anwar Qazi said the organisation receives around 20-25 bodies a day for burial. This particular woman, he said, is from Dumba Goth near the Super Highway.
Her body was brought to the foundation for the performance of final rites and burial after she was believed dead.
However, when staff began performing 'ghusl' on the woman, she suddenly came to life.
The spokesman said the woman's age was approximately 55 years old. A slip had been written up for record-keeping purposes when her body had been received by mortuary officials.
The officials had not been able to ascertain why she had been believed dead.

Its common for people to be brain-dead for some minutes before getting revived, but this case was for several hours. I think that the family did not properly check her vitals before declaring death.

This is a clear case of indifference. If an old person faints and refuses to wake up after trying all possible procedures known to any one close, efforts are made to call a doctor from nearby hospital or clink. But, invariably, the doctors refuse to undertake such fruitless visits that have no chance of any fee collection.

There is a book "Near Death Experiences." At times a person is declared dead by doctors even after clinical examination but the patient starts breathing after certain time.

It should be a crime to bury someone without doctor's certificate. Edhi center should have a doctor for that purpose.

Recently someone woke up in a grave at Iqbal Town Lahore the police didn't let anyone enter the area and asked for a huge bribe to allowed it to be opened. "To request and serve" should be the motto.

@ga Must be doctor negligence (IF a doctor pronounced her dead). There is no miracle kind of thing. She must have gone unconcious and either illiterate family members self declared death or maybe wanted to get rid of her.

Who will sue the doctor? She was at the edhi centre guys, so she is or almost lawaris. Did any doctor declare her dead or may be the volunteers? Human life is the only cheap thing in Pakistan, in fact is the cheapest that us why all the ruling class family members live abroad and they come to Pakistan to make money.

@Anon Mouse For all means and purposes, if a patient is brain-dead they are dead.It is an irreversible process. If the patient was in such a state, they wouldn't have any vitals to begin with. A person could be in a persistent vegetative state due to brain injury but there's no way back from actual cerebral necrosis. I'm not a doctor (yet) but this person may have been in a coma as a result of any number of causes such hypoxia, hypoglycemia etc. Sometimes coma is a response to heal reversible injury the body has suffered to the brain by halting unnecessary body functions, this way it can divert energy in healing the brain before allowing the person to regain consciousness.

Before we start the blame game and start asking for resignations and jail time, any one looked into the history to see if similar situations have occurred in the past? Is it not possible to be declared dead by current medical criteria and then wake up in a few hours?

Suspended animation is a condition wherby a person breaths very slow and feebly and has very slow, unforceful heart beating and the person's metsbolism is at its lowest possible. The hindu yogis practice it and some have lived for years without taking food and water. I guess that woman has got into this condition and aroused by the stimulus of cold water.

Such type of situation is called 'sinccapee' (Spelling may be wrong). In this situation the heart/pulse stops, even the eyes looks like of the dead. That is why in US they have a wake for the dead.

Scary, I think there is foul play by people bringing in her 'dead body'. Imagine if she was buried alive. There is a responsibility upon the society to insist upon a full investigation, this involves human suffering.

institute legal proceedings against the doctor for declaring her dead, poor soul imagine if she would have been buried, gives me the chills, just thinking about the poor woman. No miracles, no witchcraft, simple case of doctor's negligence.... was there no attempt prior to ghusl by Edhi when she was being put in the mortuary?
