KARACHI, Oct 18: Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad has paid rich tributes to the services rendered by Memon community in the reconstruction and stability of the country.

He was speaking as chief guest at the Memon Convention and award distribution ceremony held under the auspices of the All Pakistan Memon Federation, on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee, at Baradari, Bagh-i-Quaid-i-Azam here on Friday.

“When we speak about Pakistan Movement, it reminds us of the speech made by the Quaid-i-Azam at Albert Hall, Kolkota, in 1936 in which he had acknowledged the support extended by the Memon community to the Muslim League’s movement.” the governor said.

When Pakistan Resolution was adopted, he added, the great Quaid invited the Memon community return to their original homeland — Sindh —, which later became part of Pakistan, and they were needed here.

The Memons, pursuing the traditions set by their ancestors, have been establishing and patronizing welfare organizations and contributing greatly to the public welfare activities. They played a commendable role especially in the new-born Pakistan by providing assistance to the refugees. They governor remarked that the community had come forward to establish industries and focused on strengthening the country’s otherwise weak economy.

Dr Ibad mentioned that six years after the birth of Pakistan, this community entrenched itself in the new homeland. Later it brought its divided segments to one platform and laid the foundation of All Pakistan Memon Federation which has 77 associations in its fold and each of them has its own welfare projects.

The governor further acknowledged that the Memon community had a big network throughout the country for welfare activities. He held out the assurance that the government would extend all possible cooperation to the federation and that he would pay due attention to the problems being faced by the community.

Earlier, Mohammed Farooq Motiani, President of the federation, highlighted the activities of the organization.
