PTI emerges strongest party in KP nazim elections

PESHAWAR: The final phase of local government elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) was completed Sunday after polls for nazim and naib nazim were held in the province's 23 districts, with the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) victorious in 10 districts including Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda, DI Khan, Karak, Tank, Haripur, Torghar, Abbotabad and Battagram.

In the provincial capital – Peshawar – PTI's Arbab Asim was elected district nazim unopposed, with the PTI also able to get nazims elected in three of the city's four towns. Asim's oath-taking ceremony was also conducted earlier in the day, reported DawnNews.

In Nowshera, chief minister Pervez Khattak's brother, Liquat Khattak, was elected nazim with the PTI also bagging the naib nazim slot.

In Charsadda, PTI's Fahad Khan was elected district nazim, with Jamaat-i-Islami's Masood Shah as his deputy.

According to unofficial results on Radio Pakistan, Jamaat-i-Islami, which is the ruling PTI's coalition partner in the KP government, won in Chitral, Buner, Upper and Lower Dir, while the PML-N succeeded in Shangla, Mansehra and Swat.

The Pakistan Peoples Party was able to win in Malakand and Karak, while the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam – Fazl succeeded in Kohat and Lakki Marwat. Awami National Party won in two districts.

The tripartite alliance of Awami National Party, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam – Fazl and Pakistan Peoples Party boycotted the nazim and naib nazim elections in the district and three towns of Peshawar but did not boycott such elections in Town-4 of Peshawar and some other districts where the alliance had sufficient number of councillors to form governments.

Elections were not held in Kohistan and Bannu due to security reasons.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan congratulated the KP government on the successful holding of local government elections.

He said the empowerment of 40,000 persons, including women, was a major milestone in the democratic history of Pakistan.

Imran Khan pointed out that the PTI had fulfilled its commitment of devolving real power to the people, who will now have the political and financial authority to make decisions about their lives from the village level up – with the KP government’s plan to transfer 30 per cent of funds to the local level.

In Nowshera, CM Pervez Khattak's brother, Liquat Khattak, was elected nazim. This is the 6th member of Mr Khattak's family to join politics from the platform of PTI. Slogan of change anyone?

Very sorry that even now some people are voting for JUI, PMLN, PPP and ANP. There has to be some sense we are one of the most backward countries of the world and in last 70 years these parties have not done any good and reason why we are backward. Even then some people are voting them, please think!! If you don't like PTI then at least vote for independents.

People do not forget that corrupt rulers of the past took turns to push you to a point where you have no rights in society, no justice, you and your children are not safe... but you are still singing the songs of Zardari, Nawaz, Fazal, ANP etc. Wake up folks in KPK you are now ruled by honest people who are fighting against alliance of corrupt mafia... this is the real change in KPK

Why so many relatives of PTI ruling class? Is this the change IK was talking about? I am a big supporter of IK but results like these will result in demoralization of PTI supporters. Mr. IK do something in KPK and win again my vote next time.

This is a bold initiative taken by PTI to hold LG election, which itself a blow to the previous political govt of not transferring powers to people at local level. Similarly a huge bunch of budget allocated to these local representatives indicate a sign of sincerity of devolution. PPP surfaced as a major victim throughout the elections, either general or LG, and may continue with such treatment in future. Lets see what happens in interior Sindh where they still claim as their political bastion

Correction: Elections were not held in Kohistan since the matter of notification of the creation of two districts (Upper and Lower) is subjudice. In Bannu, the Nazim elections shall be held at a later date as the results have been challenged in the Peshawar High Court. Also, how difficult is it to name the two districts where ANP had its Nazims elected?

@anees from zaida : then how PTI can imagine that four EC members were present at thousands of polling stations on one day and rigging or stealing PTI mandate in other provinces. The party of confused. Ask IK to contest against Jaz Sadiq to bring change and withdraw property tycoon--what a Naya Pakistan.

It's great to see 40,000 new office bearers in the system, regardless of their party affiliations. This is a great step to democratise people and the fact that 30% funds will be transferred would also empower people. Credit must be given to PTI and IK for this initiative.
