Umair causes first major upset

ISLAMABAD, Oct 14: Unseeded qualifier Umair Qayyum stunned 5th seed Inam Gul, a Davis Cup player on Tuesday as the main rounds of the Federal Cup Tennis tournament began at the Islamabad Club courts.

In a hard-fought match, Umair sent his opponent crashing 6-3, 6-4 to secure a well-deserved place in the second round of the men’s singles competition.

As Inam fell by the wayside, the tournament’s top seed Aqeel Khan had to struggle to overcome the challenge of Islamabad’s upcoming Wasif Cheema in a two-set match which he won 6-4,6-4.

Second seed Asim Shafik and No 3 Nomi Qamar, however scored straightforward victories to move ahead. Asim defeated Waheed Anwar 6-2, 6-2 while Nomi crushed Muteeb Pasha 6-1, 6-1.

Also on show was Davis Cup veteran Rashid Malik who hammered Shahid Afridi 6-2, 6-3 while Asian veteran champion Hamid ul Haq routed PAF’s Shahzad Khan 6-3, 6-1. A total of 56 matches were decided in men’s singles, boys under-18, under-14 and under-12 categories.
