FAISALABAD, Oct 14: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz would not allow President Gen Pervez Musharraf to address the National Assembly as “he was an unconstitutional president and a former Army chief”.

This was stated by the PML-M leader and ARD president, Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, while speaking to workers at a convention held here on Tuesday night to mark the completion of four years of the Musharraf government.

The PML-N would launch a country-wide movement if the government by-passed the parliament and sent the army to Iraq, he said.

Mr Hashmi said that Gen Musharraf had committed a heinous crime by toppling the elected government of Nawaz Sharif, and he would have to face legal action.

He claimed that Prime Minister Zafarullah Jamali was playing the role of a puppet, and he had no say even in his cabinet.

Punjab PML-N president Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa said that all corrupt politicians of the country had been forced to unite on a single platform because the army rulers were afraid of the popularity of Nawaz Sharif.

He claimed that the Sharifs would return and contest the next general election come what may. He asked the party activists to launch a mass contact campaign in their respective areas because the days of the present government were numbered.

Punjab secretary-general Khwaja Saad Rafique criticized the law-enforcement agencies’ operation in tribal areas and termed it a step to weaken the borders of Pakistan. The interference of American agencies in policy-making and action against Pakistani nationals had become routine, he added.

MNA Raja Nadir Pervez, Punjab Assembly deputy opposition leader Rana Sanaullah Khan, MPA Khalid Mansoor and former parliamentarians Mian Abdul Mannan and Safdar Rehman also spoke on the occasion.

Case: Ghulam Muhammadabad police registered a case on Tuesday against four people for injuring PML-N MPA Sheikh Ijaz Ahmad at the behest of MNA Raja Nadir Pervez here on Monday night.

The case has been registered on the statement of Sheikh Ijaz against Raja Amir alias Ami, Raja Saqib alias Lukcy and two unidentified men.

However, police failed to arrest Raja Amir and Raja Saqib.

Sheikh Ijaz told newsmen in the hospital here on Tuesday that Raja Nadir had not so far personally visited the hospital nor tried to contact him by telephone.

Amir, Saqib and their unidentified accomplices entered the house of MPA Sheikh Ijaz and thrashed him. They threatened him that they would kill him within 48 hours. He was admitted to the Allied Hospital.

Meanwhile, the District Bar Association observed a complete strike in protest against the attack on him. Lawyers also held a protest meeting and adopted a resolution demanding the police to arrest the attackers of Sheikh Ijaz.
