LAHORE, Oct 12: Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan’s son Mansoor Khan was elected unopposed president of the Pakistan Democratic Party here on Sunday.

Rana Nazur Rehman, party’s acting president who presided over a meeting of the national council, proposed that the former revenue minister be chosen as successor to his late father.

The house unanimously accepted the proposal, after which Mansoor Khan assumed the driving seat with a pledge to continue to work for the accomplishment of his father’s mission and struggle against what he called the dictatorial system.

Delegates from various parts of the country attended the meeting, the first after the death of the octogenarian leader.

At his maiden news conference after being elevated to party’s top post, Mansoor Khan said the PDF would neither accept the LFO nor would give an individual the right to amend the Constitution.

He said the PDP, although like other parties in the ARD, had reservations about the fairness of the last year’s general elections, it would endeavour to make parliament and the prime minister sovereign and independent.

Criticizing President Musharraf for representing the country at all important fora, the PDP chief said in the parliamentary system it was the prime minister’s prerogative.

He said 32-Nicholson Road, which remained a hub of political activities for four decades, would continue to play its role for political movements.

Chaudhry Mohammed Safdar Butter has been appointed acting secretary-general of the party.
