KARACHI: The customs staff seized a container and recovered 6,312 bottles of assorted liquor / whiskey, 2,904 bottles of wine and 6,720 cans of beer having street value of nearly Rs25 million being smuggled into the country from the United Arab Emirates at the Karachi Port on Tuesday.

The customs department registered an FIR under Sections 2(s) and 32 of the Customs Act 1969 punishable under Clause 1, 8 and 14 of Section 156 (1) against Asif Bilal, son of Haneef-ur-Rehman, resident of Ittehad Colony, Peshawar.

Details down to the consumer level may kindly be sort through interrogation of Mr.Asif Bilal, son of Haneef-ur-Rehman and his accomplices. You may get an interesting information about the consumers of liquors in Pakistan because a common Pakistani is worried about 2 times bread and can,t think of consuming liquor.

What are we becoming? Global terrorists such as Bin Laden and Mullah Omar are allowed through our ports like VIPs. But the govt has to tell us what we can drink in our own homes and what we can watch and can't watch on our screens. Unblock YouTube, Legalise alcohol! This stupid govt is worse than having the British rule us, there were fewer restrictions back then.

Illegal liquor also makes gangsters rich. The laws can't stop people from drinking. Only people can stop themselves from drinking. Anything illegal gangsters can get for you, including cheap stolen goods.

What a waste. Sale of imported liquor should be legalised in Pakistan. This can be a huge tax generator for Pakistan. Just like well to do Islamic states like UAE, Malaysia and Turkey are reaping tourism and tax benefits from the sale of alcohol.

@Naxalite The seized consignment will surely be burnt in public but...but only a part of it ..not wholly. The rest will either be distributed amongst officials or sold to whole sale or retail customers / consumers. Who is going to check about the actual quantity of seized material and how much of it is really burnt ? Moreover, this may not be the very first time that the accused person has dared to bring in such big consignment and it is quite likely that he may have succeeded in all previous attempts. What went wrong this time around that the honest customs officials decided to seize it ?

Please sell this in govt liquor shops all over Karachi and make some money instead of storing till next bulldozing day , save efforts to refill these bottles with colored water and bulldozing .

Whilst I totally condemn the criminal, immoral and illegal activity in importing the alcohol, I am concerned why this should be on national news. The only news in this story really is that Asif Bilal refused to pay the Customs people a bribe - and now they are claiming that they 'seized' it. Fact of the matter is that Customs 'seize' pretty much all contraband, and upon payment by the importer, they accidentally lose the paperwork and 'release' the consignment. No wonder, Customs is such a sought after job in Pakistan.
