RAWALPINDI: At least 6 people were killed and some 40 others injured in a road accident between two passenger vans Wednesday on Fatehjang Road near the Tarnol area.
The death toll is expected to rise as the condition of several injured has been termed critical.
The accident occurred as two passengers vans, a coaster and a Mazda vehicle, collided from opposite sides.

Rescue teams have been called on the spot. Meanwhile, volunteers and passersby shifted the injured and dead to District Headquarters Hospital Rawalpindi and Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims).
According to initial reports, the accident was a result of over-speeding.

A police contingent has reached the spot and an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances of the accident.
The accident occurred in the suburbs of Islamabad, a few kilometers away from the new Islamabad airport.
The road where the accident occurred is an important route but remains a single carriage way for a significant stretch. It later expends to double carriage.

The road joins the capital with Karachi and Peshawar as it links to the GT Road.
Several accidents have occurred on along the route over the years.
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of lives in the tragic accident.
He directed for immediate rescue efforts and medical facilities for the injured. He also extended condolences with the families of the deceased.

@PTI_hasan Also I am not sure why people are so much against Metro. Metro itself is saving the cost of poor and their time. Also it will also save poor from mess of public transport which is root cause of this accident.

Nations where there is no value of life....such disasters are deem to occur. Who will be held responsible!!! No one!! Life will continue as normal...few days will take to forget these poor souls but months and years for their families. Its heart breaking. In developed nations, death by road accidents are to bare minimum, they have and are trying to eradicate this, like polio and other diseases. Reckless driving is an epidemic in our society, embedded to our bones but it has to be stopped and should be stopped.

Very tragic and unfortunate incident which has caused death of precious human lives but on the other hand convened authorities are failed to check and punish those who are doing recklessn driving and fixing of very dangerous CNG cylinders under the each seat of Van like an explosive device waiting to explode at any time , especially all the vans which are plying up from rawalpindi/Islamabd to KPK AREAS.

Very sad.
There should be check on public transport.Most of the drivers do not even know the basics of traffic rules. It should be made mandatory for all public transport drivers to get new licenses after passing comprehensive tests. Traffic police should also realize that other than not wearing seat belts there are other violations as well. I have never seen anybody fined for violation of any law other than not wearing seat belts

A refresher driving classes should be made mandatory for transport service drivers. Their should be a concerted effort to impart responsibility and consideration of others' lives. All provinces should take this up.

This route is pleading for focus from authorities. Unfortunately none has paid heed to it. I have driven a lot on this route and the amount of traffic it has, it must be doubled all the way to Kohat and Mianwali etc. Its a dilemma that no one even spoke about it ever. Sigh!

This is a very busy road with heavy traffic load, and too many accidents are taking place due to two way traffic. This should be a dual carriage way, so that can take the load of heavy traffic, which is increasing day by day. Punjab and Federal government are responsible for all the accidents which have taken place on this road.

@Ustaad really how is it saving cost of poor? By spending literally billions of rupees in a transport project that doesn't run 24/7, hardly covers all the areas of the twin cities and had uprooted the roads of the entire city for 3 years. What we need is traffic rules and civil sense to follow them

It is shame that our Government does nothing apart from taking notices. The Nawaz Government should realize that no party in Pakistan in future will ever get the absolute majority being enjoyed by PML-N. They should change the traffic rules and regulations to avoid this sort of carnage happening on a regular basis. Fines should be increased ten fold and Insurance should be made mandatory for all vehicles and motor cycles. These sort of changes will create awareness in drivers

@MJ Lots of lower class ppl are travelling daily now on it whether it is clerks,chaprasis, low class office staffs,maids,Chauikidars for just 20 rupees. I know we upper & upper middle class ppl dont like it because it is build from the taxes We are paying but eventually it is benefiting lower class & poors.
