Nawaz, Modi to meet in Russia on July 10: FO

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is scheduled to meet his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in Ufa, Russia.

"PM Nawaz Sharif's schedule for a bilateral meeting at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit is being worked out," FO spokesman Qazi Khalilullah told DawnNews.

Both premiers will be meeting on the sidelines of the summit which will be held in Russia on July 9 and 10, an FO source said.

Modi is expected to raise India’s concerns regarding terrorism, including the alleged mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attack Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi who was allowed to walk free in April, sources say.

Pakistan and India's presence at the summit comes as both countries have started the process of joining the security bloc led by China and Russia.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping said, "..India and Pakistan's admission to the SCO will play an important role in the SCO's development, it will play a constructive role in pushing for the improvement of their bilateral relations."

It is the first time the grouping has expanded since 2001.

At the meeting, they should: 1. Announce immediate resumption of cricket ties to create goodwill. 2. Agree to put an immediate end to proxy wars in South Asia. 3. Gag ministers and officials who utter vitriol against each other. 4. Establish a system of continuous dialogue to address all issues.

I hope the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) would provide a good platform to India & Pakistan to resolve their differences and work towards a common objective of achieving prosperity & peace in South Asia. My personal opinion is there should be regular joint meetings between India & Pakistan alternately in both countries involving not only civilian leaders, but also military leaders (Chiefs & Corps commanders) & Directors of intelligence agencies of both countries. The meetings should try to agree on stoppage of proxy wars in each other's countries & a genuine co-operation in jointly fighting the menace of terrorism. Once understandings are reached on these matters, the atmosphere would improve tremendously. This would automatically lead to solving of any intractable problems like Kashmir, in a brotherly spirit of give and take...

One thing is clear when it comes to Strategic partnership both nations can lead ahead. People to people contact will increase in Strategic partnership. Just now in Kazakhstan PM Modi hinted they might look forwards towards Gas pipe line projects which is suppose to benefit both India & Pakistan. If economy will develop it will be in favor of Both the nation along will all Mankind.

This meeting would be restricted to just hand shaking session and nothing more. Modi has made it quite clear to Pakistan to change its decades old policy at LoC before any engagement taking place.
