KARACHI: The metropolis is home to 47 per cent of HIV/Aids patients living across Pakistan, with a significant number of those affected by the deadly disease living in Saddar, Baldia, Korangi and SITE, said country director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and Aids (UNAids) Marc Saba on Friday.

Mr Saba was talking to Karachi Commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui during his visit to his office. He said UNAids was there to help control the deadly disease in Karachi where its incidence was alarmingly high. There were still some grey areas in providing required treatment facilities to the patients, he said.

Expressing his willingness to provide all possible support for the cause, he spoke about the mayors’ conference organised by his agency in Paris and numerous other major cities of the world. He said such conferences were organized with a city-specific approach.

He said UNAids understood the plight of Aids patients belonging to developing nations and was keen to be part of coordinated programmes aimed at prevention, management and rehabilitation of the patients.
