SUKKUR: A murder suspect managed to escape during an encounter with police that followed a raid in Sojhro Khan Umrani village in Jacobabad on Friday. Police arrested five suspects claiming that they along with the wanted man, Ghulam Fareed aka Comrade Umrani, opened fire on the raiding team.

A team of the City police station carried out the raid to arrest Comrade Umrani, who along with some other suspects allegedly killed a woman, Tahira Khoso, in Dangar Mohalla of Jacobabad city on March 19 on the pretext of her having an extramarital affair. The main suspect in the case is her husband, Waqar Umrani, who is also at large.

The City police said they received a tip-off about the presence of the wanted suspects in the village and carried out the raid but some armed villagers harbouring them opened fire which was returned. The raiding team insisted that Comrade Umrani was among the attackers and managed to escape in the cover of the encounter.

The team did not say if any policeman or the suspect was wounded in the encounter, but claimed that five of the attackers, Imamuddin, Ghulam Ali, Ghous Bukhsh, Shah Nawaz and Lakhmir — all Brohis by caste — were arrested following the clash. Two shotguns were seized from them, they added.
