Zimbabwe captain Chigumbura suspended for two ODIs

LAHORE: Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura will miss the rest of the one-day international series against Pakistan after being suspended for two matches for maintaining a slow over rate in Tuesday's first ODI.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement on Wednesday that Chigumbura was suspended because Zimbabwe was found to be three overs short of its target during Pakistan's 41-run victory.
ICC remote match referee Roshan Mahanama also fined the Zimbabwe players 40 per cent of their match fees. Chigumbura scored his maiden ODI century before he was out for 117 off 95 balls in Tuesday's match and will miss the last two ODIs on Friday and Sunday.
“Chigumbura pleaded guilty to the charge and the subsequent penalties were accepted without the need for a formal hearing,” the ICC said.
Shoaib Malik hit his first century in six years to help Pakistan outbat Zimbabwe in the first day-night international by 41 runs in Lahore on Tuesday, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
The ICC had declined to send its match officials due to security concerns for Pakistan's first international series at home in six years.
Pakistan won the Twenty20 series against Zimbabwe 2-0, with Chigumbura scoring his maiden T20 half century in the first match.

See, this is the problem with ICC. They just dont want cricket to flourish in Pakistan. The fine is being imposed by a REMOTE Match Referee. So the punishment should also be REMOTE. This is ridiculous and exactly portrays as to the intentions of ICC towards Pakistan Cricket. Thanks to the representatives of Pakistan in ICC. Mr. Sethi this one should be on you!

@W totaaly agree with you. This is just pathetic of ICC. I think they are peeved off with the fact that Zimbabwe came up to play when ICC did not want cricket in Pakistan. ICC should not have any right to penalize a player for these games, it should be a decision with local cricket boards.

This punishment is too harsh. These players are already underpaid and they do not get to play too many games. A stern verbal warning or 10% match fee penalty would have been sufficient.

Harsh though it may sound (and I agree as I said above) but reality is that ICC has to apply the rules consistently on this. Two match ban and 40% fine is as per the rules. Those claiming it's punishment for visiting Pakistan are being sentimental to say the least and should corroborate their claim by giving an example where ICC has been lenient.

Mind boggling logic of ICC. ICC, which is primarily run by the so called big-3, look quite busy in fighting the return of international cricket to Pakistan. I have a humble message to ICC (and the small hearted-3) that we Pakistanis have a HISTORY of facing the odds and have prevailed in extreme challenging conditions. For reference please ponder on how Pakistan came into being.

Feel very sorry for this. This is not how ICC should treat the visiting team. Zim on this tour is more than a visiting team. This cricket series is more than a game. Players are seen as heroes irrespective of win or loss. Why doesn't this ICC get this simple logic?

This is a dumb rule in first place. There are many other ways of controlling a game than suspending captains. I like Sri Lankan approach, they keep changing captains so no one is responsible for 2 games in a row.

This utterly nonsense by the ICC to have a say to the match in hot weather in Pakistan when their officials making decisions sitting in cooler temperature!
