ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s protest over death sentence for former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi and over 100 other activists has upset the Egyptian government.

The Egyptian foreign ministry summoned Pakistan’s Charge d’affaires Muhammad Aejaz on Tuesday over Islamabad’s criticism of the sentence.

A statement from the Egypt’s foreign ministry described the Pakistani reaction as premature and “unacceptable interference in the internal affairs of Egypt”.

The Egyptian foreign ministry said that Pakistani comments could affect the relationship.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office had, after sentencing of Mr Morsi and other defendants, said that it was concerned over penalties.

The FO statement had further called on the Egyptian government to meet requirements of justice under the law and show compassion.

Mr Morsi and more than 100 others, including Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badei, were earlier this month sentenced to death by an Egyptian court for their role in the mass jailbreak during the 2011 uprising and other charges.

The sentences awarded by the Egyptian court are subsequently referred to a Mufti for confirmation. A final verdict is due to be announced on June 2.
