Karzi to seek re-election

Published October 3, 2003

KABUL, Oct 2: Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said he will stand in next year’s elections and is setting up a political movement.

“I don’t know if I will lead a political party, but definitely a movement amongst the people,” Karzai said in an interview with the BBC.

Karzai said a new law on political parties would ban the military from engaging in politics.

The law “will provide people with a platform to form political parties in which having an armed group or association with an armed group will be completely banned.”—AFP
