Sindh IG transfers SSP Malir for 'misusing' authority

KARACHI: Sindh Police Inspector General (IG) Ghulam Hyder Jamali on Thursday night transferred Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rao Anwar from Malir, according to a police spokesperson.

The provincial police chief said Rao Anwar “misused” his authority following which he has been transferred from Malir district.

SSP East Peer Mohammad Shah has been given additional charge for the time being, while Rao Anwar has been directed to report to the Central Police Office, the spokesperson added.

The police spokesperson said the IG’s orders came after Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah took serious notice of Rao Anwar’s press conference earlier in the day, in which he leveled serious allegations against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).

The SSP had claimed that the MQM has links with Indian spy agency RAW, and that the party sent workers to India to get them trained by RAW and eventually use that training to spread terror in Pakistan.

“The MQM is a terrorist outfit in guise of a political party and should be banned,” the SSP said in a press conference earlier in the day.

Qaim Ali Shah has directed the Sindh IG to enquire into the matter and submit a report within 24 hours.

Good action on part of the Chief Minister. Public servants cannot be allowed to run amock. If charges are to be made, they should be done through proper channels i.e. through courts of law not through unsubstantiated allegations.

There has to be some kind of truth in this story no one wants to put his or hers life in harms way by giving false statements specially in Pakistan. People are even scared to tell the truth. Let him finish his inquiry and give the full report instead of transferring or sending him away.

This SSP was doubtful anyways. Why after 17 years. The whole press conference was shady and was looking like it was setup to just defame MQM. Good move by CM. This kind of doubtful police guys needs to be removed. It not a job of Police SP or Ranger to do media trial. They have to go to court and present with proof to court. This kind of dirty investigation only works in Pakistan. I anywhere else those police guys and rangers can get sued in court for these kind of dirty politics. Shame on Police SP and Rangers.

Excellent move by CM and IG Sindh.... now investigate who was behind SSP's stunt. His actions have caused huge embarrassment to police and further discredit to already controversial Karachi operation in public opinion. Everyone wants to get rid of real criminals hence politicizing the operation does no good to the objective of achieving peace in the city where everyone's mandate should be honored. LEAs should evaluate public opinion by direct dialog with public representatives so they fully understand public feedback about these irresponsible/rogue actions of their officials that tarnish LEAs' credibility. Well, It might have been appropriate to investigate the evidence he was talking about, and if no evidence found or if proved that he misused his position then should be sacked and tried in court. If he was truthful and he is treated like this even being a ssp then who is going to say truth and where this will lead already declining society.

@Junaid It was an announcement, but the Sindh IG doesn't get it, unless he is involved with rogue ISS agents and drug smugglers. He is not more powerful than Pakistan special forces. If the army asks the IG to step down he will have to. If the military has evidence about him he would face a court marshal. An inspector general is not independent of an army high command. He has one foot in quicksand. He could put the other shoe in it.

That is the only way Karachi can be rid of scums of the society and make city a safe place for its suffering citizens. SSP Rao Anwar's allegations may have been inappropriate, but the statements of the suspects in custody should be taken seriously and investigated further, rather than making it a political issue. These are very serious allegations, and therefore must be taken seriously, and dealt with via appropriate channels.

How unfortunate, that a very senior police officer was transferred on the bidding of the Chief Minister. From the report we gather, that the officer was transferred for the alleged abuse of authority. I would therefore expect the Inspector General to provide evidence of the abuse. If the report published in The Dawn is correct and the police has evidence of the grave charges laid against a major political party, then IG and the government should have complimented the investigating officer and his team, rather than, relieving him from his post. But then this is the way things happen in sin and perhaps in other parts of Pakistan as well

Exactly he deserved the punishment. Police job is to arrest and take them to vourt. This is a clear media trial and defies the court trial. In a democratic and civilzed world these kind of cases are thrown out of court and it is now happening in our country too. Sindh government had for the first time shown maturity to come forward and prevented the attempt to sabotage the working relationship between PPP and MQM. No doubt MQM is a very powrful force in urban Sindh and had even won 19 seats in cantonment elections which I beleive straightly negates the propaganda of foul and fraudulent .I think we are moving through a very dangerous phase in our history and threatening and accusing attitude would not work. For a better and safer Pakistan we need to build a trust among all the regional nationalities thriving in Pakistan and bring them to the Pakistanihood through love and harmony not threat and victimzation.

This SSP has gone beyond his mandate. People who are favoring this kind of press conference need to realize that the obligation of Police is to present any real evidence in court rather then venting and being a part of political game. Having said this, isn't it ironic that despite using of their armed wings, showing of weapons in public gathering and firing openly in public rally by other political/religious parties, only MQM has been picked on in these mischievous press conferences.

Here is my theory . There are local players and foreign players. Foreign players are using local players to fight among them, because they know their mindset, weaknesses and strengths more than themselves. Once the local players are weakened then foreign players will land like when immune system of the body is weak it is easy to destroy it. We do not have to go far see what is happening in middle east. Foreign players are patronizing all the local players . The rulers are supported and the ruled are given advice that help is on the way if you are in trouble . Question to ask: why would an SSP make such a claim? If he is out of bounds then it is a police matter to discipline him. No need for CM to jump in. Clearly they believe that he is guilty. While I personally don't buy the RAW angle, are we disagreeing on his MQM assessment. Heck I believe that PPP and PML-* are not much different.

Today a serving SSP has held a press conference against a political party which represents millions and millions of people and if the trend is not stopped by giving him an exemplary punishment then tomorrow a serving constable can hold a press conference against the President or the Prime Minister. Transfer is no remedy; he must be sacked like Nekukara for not following the law. Isn't it a strategy before retirement to gain sympathy of anti-MQM elements so as to whitewash his own" adventures" in the past to which the old editions of "Daily Ummat" Karachi are a testimony?

If this is the criteria to transfer SSP Malir, then the entire police department of the country must have been transferred on this base for holding defaming press conferences and press releases against common criminals and non-MQM terrorists. When TTP gained power our political parties and ex-army general compromised to them and no one paid the price other than the common citizens and the law enforcement personnel. Thanks to General Shareef for taking a courageous step of Zarb-e-azb and PMLN to stand behind counter-terrorists operations country wide. We must see our country in a larger picture where we can become Asian Tiger only if we establish internal peace especially after the 46 billion of investment by China.

@baji In good old USA every metropolitan city have their own police department and their direct boss in the Mayer of the city. Plus a New York NY police officer can not be transferred to Buffalo NY city police though both cities are in NY estate.

There is no Proof that MQM is Involved in Terrorism, All these are just baseless allegations. I have witnessed 1000 times MQM Workers doing humanitarian work..Without MQM there is no future of Karachi..

We as Pakistani should not disfame any political party,especially the partywho is having heavy mandate of general Masses and the same has also been proved recently in NA246 by election.

The IGP has proved gutless. He should have stood behind his SSP and neither suspended nor transferred him. Instead the IGP succumbed to political pressure. The result is, a DSP has been shot dead by the same people the SSP accused of terrorism. Will the IGP now stand up and take responsibility for the death of DSP and admit that had he shown guts, the terrorists would not have been encouraged and the DSP may still be alive?

@Ali If someone wants to to help Pakistan, first he must perform his duty with honesty. He cought the criminal, its fine, now prove him guilty in the court of law. That's the next step not rh the press conference.

@Dr. Liaqat "Did the SSP say any thing that is not common knowledge?" if political rivals spread misinformation against each other it is understandable but a person of SSP rank cannot become a political rival and cannot give political statements by calling press conferences

@Ali "This is the problem in Pakistan.if someone want to do anything for Pakistan" this is not the job of a public servant in this case an SSp to hold political press conference and make political statement if he wanted to do something he should have gathered gathered prove against the accused and present them in the court that's all he was acting like the member of rival political party as if he is the member of PTI
