Iranian general accuses Saudis of following in Israel's footsteps

ANKARA: The commander of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards accused Saudi Arabia on Monday of following in Israel's footsteps in the Islamic world by carrying out air strikes in Yemen, the official IRNA news agency reported.
A Saudi-led alliance began bombing Houthi militia in Yemen last month, seeing a threat from their advances across the Arabian Peninsula state. Riyadh also wants to restore Yemen's president, forced into exile by the Houthis.

General Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, said Saudi Arabia was “shamelessly and disgracefully bombing and killing a nation”.
“Saudi Arabia is following in the Zionist [Israel] regime's footsteps in the Islamic world,” Jafari was quoted as saying by IRNA.
The United States and Saudi Arabia have accused Iran of arming the Houthis but Iran says it gives only political and humanitarian support to the Houthis.

Because Iran wants to control the middle east. With Hezbollah stronger than the Leabonese military,Assad in Syria and the Houthis in Yeman,Iran has surrounded Saudia Arabia on all sides and understandably the Saudis will fight back. Also with a recent comment by an Iranian mullah that Mecca and Medina should be controlled by holy man and not Saudi Arabia just adds more fuel to the fire.

Well said and very factual. General's statement represents my feeling as well. I am a Sunni by faith but condemn the Saudi's atrocities. Sadly the Saudis are doing in the name of Sunni vs. Shia which is the biggest lie. Yemanis are my brothers and sisters and it breaks my heart when I see them and their children killed or hurt.

I advise General Jafari to read history of Saud family to know when and why they arrived Hijaz. Also try to understand why ottoman's governor left makkah. Interfering in yemen is part of their hobby. Historians will never be surprised at King Salman's advdntures in yemen. But dont compare with Israel. That is a war of two faiths.

Let me be the first Indian to congratulate the Brothers Sharif for anything! They have shown great maturity in keeping Pakistan out of this fratricidal conflict, even though they owe the house of Saud big time. It is not just Yemen. Once you enter that quicksand called the Middle East the only certainties are that there will be heavy casualties and no easy exit. As that other big military power, Turkey, has shown, at times discretion is the better part of valour.

Regardless of what you may or may not think of the Saudi-Iran tussle in the region, please don't forget that Mansour Hadi was the democratically elected President of Yemen who was thrown out forcibly by outside actors working with the Houthis. The Saudis decided to take military action although they should have taken this up with the UN first or atleast the OIC (Oh I see) to get a consensus from other partners in the region.

These wars are about the Persian Empire trying to expand its footprint. But the world has changed, it is no longer 500 AD. People don't like being trampled over. Pakistan should keep out of this mess but tell Iran not to interfere in Pakistan. Pakistan needs to develop it self and build up its economy but at the same time protect its environment. The UN had worked out a deal for the Yemenis but it did not suit the Saudis who resorted to a continuous air campaign. They continue to kill men women and children from the air and basically want complete Saudi control of Yemen on their terms, not a Yemini solution. Pakistan should stay out of this snake pit!

No country including Israel has non stop bombed Arab capital and main port for this long. Bombing population centers are akin to Isareli attacks on Gaza surrounded by blockade. In all the Gaza killings would dwarf when Saudi attacks have achieved supremacy in the area.

All parties to the conflict should start peace negotiations immediately. If this is not contained, it has the potential to snow ball into a major war in the region. Military solutions are never permanent, unnecessary bloodshed has long term repercussions. Last but not the least, Pakistan should stay out of this war at all cost, they should only assist in peace making negotiations between the warring countries.

What KSA is doing in Yemen is horrific. But can Iran describe this humanitarian and political support focused specifically on one tribe??? Doesn't it considered interference in another country's internal matters???

@observer because KSA funded there terrorists like IS, Alqaeda. Factions like Al Nusra and free Syrian Army etc and recruited them from abroad. They were not Syrians. Houthis are not like IS and they are not outsiders. They are people of Yemen and have tight to reject or elect Govts.

@Gabeel it is Saudis failure unable to win hearts of Arab people. Hearts can not be won by bombing and kill masses. Ira has nothing to do with that. It's not Ira that is encircling saudi emperors. It is corrupt and crimes desires Saudi emperors that is encircling KSA and will eventually doom Saudis.

@salman It is not the Houthis who are close to Sunnis but it is actually the Zaidi shias who are very close in their fiqh and other practices to Hanafi Sunnis.
Houthis on the other hand are a political/militant movement, funded and directed by the Iranians. Now that they've taken over Northern Yemen, the true ideology and identity of the Zaidi shias will be lost.
