KARACHI: A modern system is being introduced in the city to collect and process garbage under international standards, according to managing director of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board Roshan Ali Sheikh.

He said at a review meeting here on Friday that the board was committed to ensuring that 100 per cent refuse was lifted on a daily basis instead of only 30 to 40 per cent under the modern system to protect Karachi from the ill effects of pollution.

Mr Sheikh said that under the new system, six garbage transfer stations, a garbage transfer station with RDF unit and recycling plant would be established across the city. The RDF unit and recycling plant would cost Rs300 million, he added.

He said the reason Karachiities suffered from skin and lung diseases was because of the 60 per cent garbage left littering the streets. If garbage was lifted on a daily basis, it would have a positive effect on people’s health and the environment, he said.

The new system to pick refuse from homes, industrial areas and commercial places would soon be put into practice and later it would be replicated in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Nawabshah and other cities of the province, he said, adding it would help improve the image of Sindh, including Karachi.
