ISLAMABAD: A suspected thief was feared drowned in Nullah Leh after escaping from the police custody on Saturday, police said.

According to sources, the Industrial Area police on a tip-off intercepted a taxi and recovered stolen batteries from it. The taxi driver, however, escaped.

Later, he was found hiding in a CDA sewerage treatment plant from where the guards handed him over to the police.

During the interrogation, he allegedly confessed to a number of thefts and said he used to sell the stolen items at a junkyard. The police took him to the junkyard at Essa Nagri, I-9/1, for the recovery of the stolen items.

When the police were grilling the junk dealer, the arrested man ran away towards Nullah Leh. The police chased him but he disappeared in the nullah.
