Changez causes major upset

ISLAMABAD, Sept 27: Changez Afridi scored the first major upset in the qualifying round of the ITF Pakistan International Juniors Tennis Championship (first leg) at the Islamabad Club courts on Saturday by beating fourth seed Shaheen Mahmood.

Changez won, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to advance to the final round of the qualifying event from which four players will make it to the main draw.

In another interesting match, Tabish Raza had to put in quite a fight in going past Sibtain Masood 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

Others moving into the final qualifying round were Ahmed bin Zia Shamsi, Nasir Mahmood, Abid Ali and Shehryar Ashraf.

Meanwhile, India’s Rupeshe Roy has been seeded No.1 in the main draw of the boys singles competition that starts on Monday. Sumit Parkash Gupta, another Indian player, is the second seed followed by Pakistan’s Shahzad Khan.

Other top seeded players are: Jitin Bishnoi (India, 4), Nishendiran NS (Sri Lanka, 5), Wasif Cheema (Pakistan, 6), Sandeep Kumar (India, 7) and Vivek Shokeen (India, 8).
