ISLAMABAD: The Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) issued on Friday government guarantees for construction of five wind power projects in Sindh, having the capacity to produce 230MW of electricity.

The projects are being developed by the Master Wind Energy Ltd, Tenaga Generasi Ltd, Gul Ahmed Wind Power Company Ltd, Tapal Wind Energy Ltd and Hydrochina Dawood Power (Pvt) Ltd.

The total investment involved is $600 million and the projects will be constructed in Thatta in about 18 months. The plants will begin producing electricity by the end of 2016.

The projects include a 50MW plant being constructed under the Pakistan-China economic corridor programme.

Five wind power projects are already providing 256MW of electricity to the national grid from the area. The construction of the new projects will help reduce loadshedding in the country. According to experts, Thatta has the potential to produce 50,000MW of wind power. AEDB Director Sheeraz Anwar Khan told Dawn that the projects would be connected to the national grid by September 2016.

He said the projects would bring more than $1 billion investment in the country.
