QUETTA: Militants attacked a police check post in Mekhtar area of Balochistan's Loralai district on Thursday, killing four policemen including the station house officer (SHO) of Rara Sham police station.

The militants opened indiscriminate fire at the check post and also hurled a hand grenade, which resulted in the death of three police constables and SHO Tahir Shah, Levies officials told DawnNews. The check post was also damaged and a police mobile was destroyed during the attack, they added.

Following the attack, additional contingents of security personnel reached the site and cordoned off the area. But the attackers managed to flee the crime scene and disappeared in the nearby mountains.

Bodies of the slain police officials were shifted to a nearby hospital. The situation turned tense in the area following the attack.

Levies officials said the numbers of attackers still remain unknown, while no militant group has so far claimed responsibility of the attack.

This is the same area where at least seven Frontier Corps (FC) personnel were killed when militants stormed a security check post in January this year.

Security sources had said that around 40 militants attacked the check post with rockets and gunfire killing seven FC personnel.

Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest but least-developed province, has remained under the grip of violence for over a decade.
