LAHORE: The investigation police have arrested more than 35 suspects in the Youhanabad lynching case, a senior police official told Dawn on Sunday.

Most arrests came in a crackdown launched by various police teams in the wee hours on Sunday. Many of them were arrested at houses of their close relatives where they were hiding.

Investigation SSP Rana Ayaz Saleem told Dawn that the police first established identity of the suspects who were involved in lynching two innocent youngsters and then arrested them in crackdown. He said the identity of the suspects was established through TV footages, still cameras and other relevant sources.

No under-age person or woman had been taken into custody, he said. He said the National Database and Registration Authority was yet to release its report about the identity of the suspects involved in the lynching case.

The Nishtar Colony police had already registered a case against dozens of unknown protesters for torturing and burning the two youngsters alive in the wake of Youhanabad suicide blasts.
