ROME: A glass-sided black hearse slowly bore the body of Egyptian ex-King Farouk on Saturday from [the] Morgue to the Rome cemetery a few blocks away. Grieving family members, diplomats and personal representatives from two European Royal houses walked behind. The brief and simple funeral procession was led by 13-year-old Fuad, only son of Farouk and inheritor of the major share of an estate estimated at about three million dollars.

Among the 150 mourners were personal representatives from Prince Rainier of Monaco, and former-King Umberto of Italy. King Farouk died on Thursday at the age of 45, stricken by a fatal heart attack while dining out. The placing of Farouk’s walnut coffin in a building at Campo Merano cemetery was only a temporary step pending permanent burial outside of Italy. [Farouk’s lawyers] said Muslim countries were being contacted to see if permission could be got for burial. [They] did not say which countries were being approached.
