LAHORE, Sept 24: The MMA is planning to change its strategy in the parliament as it feels that the government should not be given a free hand for running the house in case of failure to fulfil the promise on president’s uniform within days.

The new strategy includes tabling an impeachment motion against Gen Pervez Musharraf as the alliance hopes that some disgruntled MPs of the Treasury may also support it, according to sources in the MMA.

They also hinted at launching a mass movement against Gen Musharraf from Oct 12, warning the government that they expected its response on the contentious clauses of LFO within days and not in weeks.

They said the government must not rely on agencies’ reports that the masses would not respond to the MMA protest call on the LFO issue. “The masses are waiting for a big movement against the general, as they are very much disturbed by his policies on the Middle East and Afghanistan.”

The sources did not agree with the suggestion that a mass movement at this juncture of time might result in another martial law.

Asked if the new suggestions put forward by an MMA delegation to the prime minister on Wednesday meant that the alliance was ready to hold more talks on the LFO, they said it was just an eleventh hour effort to make the 10-month exercise on the issue fruitful.

They said the MMA had submitted the original package agreed upon by both the parties in Lahore talks, which did not carry any new proposal.

About taking along the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) in their anti-government drive, they said a Bangladesh-like model was under consideration in which joint targets were identified and the parties allowed to use different modes for achieving them.

Asked why the religious parties were focusing on their re-organization — especially in Punjab, they said the step was aimed at strengthening contacts with the masses for provision of infrastructure in case of polls or a movement.
