KARACHI, Sept 24: A non-government organization has been established to provide safety at the coastline from Defence Society to Mauripur.

The beach areas will include Sea View, Clifton, Sandspit, Hawksbay, French Beach, Paradise Point, Cape Montz and Mubarak Village covering approximately 32.9kms of popular beach front.

The NGO, Pakistan Aquatic Life Saving (PALS), will seek help and contributions from the international community and will have about 120 lifeguards for the beaches in Karachi with 50 employed full time and the remaining part time employees.

Talking to Dawn, PALS President Reza Samad said that most of the lifeguards employed would belong to the poor fishing communities situated along the coastline (who are naturally good swimmers), thereby providing a much needed livelihood to an otherwise improvised society. — Staff Reporter
