KARACHI: The 18th convocation of the Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET), held at the Expo Centre on Saturday, was a brief affair with degrees swiftly conferred soon after the vice chancellor and the chancellor’s addresses.

Presenting the annual report, Vice Chancellor Jawaid Hasan Rizvi said that SSUET, established in 1993 by the Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys’ Association with an enrolment of over 21,000 students and 13,000 graduates, has come a long way. The university pioneered in setting up a biomedical engineering department. And last year, it also introduced three new technologies, namely software engineering, bioinformatics and architecture. “Now the university imparts an education of BS programme in 10 disciplines and Master’s in six while the PhD programme currently facilitates computer and computer engineering,” said the VC.

Meanwhile, university Chancellor Engr Mohammad Adil Usman said that he was happy to see that the graduates of SSUET are able to meet the demands of the modern world. “Engineers of this university hold responsible positions in reputable national and multi-national organisations, both in Pakistan and abroad,” he said.

Advising this year’s graduates to pursue a positive role in society and be problem solvers who are up for all kinds of challenges coming their way, he said: “Our country is going through a critical phase, having suffered greatly, and we have expectations and confidence that you, our young engineers, will rise to the occasion and cope with the challenges ahead.”

Some 1,100 students from the disciplines of computer, electronics, civil, telecommunication, biomedical engineering and computer science were conferred degrees besides the university’s first PhD, Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Engineering, awarded to Rabia Noor Enam. For outstanding achievements, students were also honoured with gold, silver and bronze medals.
