TIMERGARA: A total of Rs41 million were embezzled in several development projects in Lower Dir during the previous Awami National Party-led government of which Rs11 million had been recovered and transferred to the government exchequer, according to sources.

An official of anti-corruption department told Dawn that they had conducted investigations into the alleged embezzlement in government funds. He said that during investigations embezzlement of Rs41 million had been detected.

He said that of the total embezzled amount Rs11 million had been recovered from the officials of communication and works department, irrigation department and the contractors concerned.

The source said that Rs15.3 million were embezzled in construction of protection walls on the bank of Swat River and Panjkora, of which Rs8 million had been recovered from the officials of irrigation department and the contractor.

The official said that Rs10 million were embezzled in Odigram road project of which Rs4.5 million had been recovered from the officials of communication and works department. Similarly, Rs11 million were embezzled in construction of link roads and street pavement in PK-95, of which Rs6.8 million were recovered.

The source said that cases against the corrupt officials would be sent to the National Accountability Bureau for further action.

OFFICE-BEARERS ELECTED: Qaumi Watan Party, Adenzai tehsil chapter, on Sunday elected Sultan Sher as president and Mohammad Israr general secretary. The election was supervised by party’s district general secretary Latifur Rehman. The party workers from all union councils took part in election. The new office-bearers said on the occasion that QWP was playing its role in development of the area.
