GUJRANWALA: A police inspector was taken into custody by Cantonment police on Saturday on the orders of the chief minister and the inspector general of police on charges of aerial firing in the wedding ceremony of his son in DC Colony while PML-N workers also involved in the firing escaped.

Reports said PML-N Ghakkhar Town leader Zahid Inayat Butt alias Thuma Butt and other party workers were involved in aerial firing at the wedding ceremony of the son of Inspector Tahir Farooq Cheema.

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and IGP Mushtaq Sukhera took notice of the incident when the news was telecast by the electronic media and issued orders for arrest all those involved following registration of a case. The suspects managed to escape when the police raided their houses. However, police took Inspector Cheema into custody.

Cantonment SHO Inspector Ansar Mohal said Zahid Inayat Butt was also wanted in a robbery case in a bus on GT Road.

Inspector Tahir Farooq Cheema said no firing occurred in the wedding ceremony of his son, however, firing was held in another wedding ceremony of the “Cheema family”.

According to reports, Inspector Cheema is not in the police station’s lockup and he is being given a VIP treatment in the office of the SHO.

VACANT: Ten posts of senior medical officers and seven posts of medical officers are vacant in Divisional Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) here, causing problems for the patients.

Medical Superintendent Anwar Aman told Dawn the high officials of the health department had been informed about the staff shortage and doctors would be appointed on the vacant posts soon.

SCHOLARSHIPS: The government has approved the monthly scholarship for 32 young doctors of the Gujranwala Medical College and funds have been released for the purpose.

The college principal told the media the institute was the first where each young doctor would be awarded with Rs30,000 per month scholarship.

He said scholarships would be given from the current month from the college funds.

REPORT: The intelligence agencies, police and Counter Terrorism Department sent its report to Punjab government recommending that religious leaders and activists involved in sectarian clashes should be listed in fourth schedule.

According to a report, the agencies prepared a report on sectarian clashes in the city on the occasion of Eid Miladun Nabi and Muharram etc in which dozens of people, including Civil Lines SP Zeeshan Siddiqi, were injured and suggested that cases against the same leaders and activists should be tried in the anti-terrorism courts.

The agencies prepared the list of 45 people involved in sectarianism and sent to higher authorities.
