Bodies of five newborn babies recovered from garbage heap in Tando Allah Yar

KARACHI: Bodies of five newborn babies were recovered from a garbage heap near Abdul Sattar Bachani petrol pump in the Tando Allah Yar district of Sindh on Saturday.

Following discovery of the bodies, local residents in the area informed police and Civil Hospital officials.

Police reached the site and took the bodies into custody, which were later shifted to Civil Hospital.

In the aftermath of the discovery, panic spread in the area and residents demanded the arrest of those involved in this heinous offence.

According to Pakistani law, anyone found to have abandoned an infant can be jailed for seven years, while anyone guilty of secretly burying a child can be imprisoned for two years. Murder is punishable with life imprisonment.

But crimes of infanticide are rarely prosecuted.

Edhi says that up to 200 babies are left in its 400 cradles nationwide each year and that it handles thousands of requests for adoption by childless couples.

Realities of a rapidly declining society. Whatever the reason, it is hideous, criminal and cruel to its core. When there are cradles offered by welfare centres why do these God given souls be left in the garbage? So sad...it seems we are really challenging the existence of a hereafter!

Why people give birth to babies when they do not want to carry them. I am frustrated why such cases never get resolved. Police should investigate how many babies were born in the local hospitals and maternity centers and whether these are still with their parents or not. This is just my suggestion but the people trained and hired to do such jobs can do better. But the only thing they do best is sit quietly as everybody will forget the incident because we'll get something new to talk about.

We need to introduce safe-haven laws as exist in many other places. Some may argue that these would encourage immorality. I don't think they have a leg to stand on. What they will do is save babies from such horrible fates.

There should be more and more adoption programs and cradles available so that babies make to homes who can take care of them. Govt should make it easy, I am not saying this to encourage giving up your child, only saying because it seems that economy has taken its toll, times are tough, circumstances bad, and people will give up a child.....Edie is saying thousands of requests come from childless parents but he gets 200 babies, it means supply is less than demand, so every possible step should be taken to save the babies, if they can find home then make it easy for them, it will stop this barbaric act, wish those kids could have been saved, a child is blessing from God!! @Harmony I think lack of support, awareness and education. Someone not mature enough, under pressure, under stress, and not informed that could have dropped by Edhi may resolve to such heinous act. I am not sure if there are any, but there should be many family planning centers for women, to educate them on contraceptive, child rearing and nursing, and also if they end up in drastic situation then how to do the right thing and let someone adopt the child.

It is sad that five infant bodies ended up in a waste dump. How it is possible that five infants got together at the same time in one waste dump. It could be birthing center which may be performing abortions collected these infants and disposed them off at the dump. It is possible these women are unwed mothers. It is possible that children were born to famine hit people starving and walking for finding food. It is possible that soe one may have transported bodies from far and dumped in Tando Allahyar. It is also possible that some caste people have no graveyard to bury their young ones. Water ever situation be, this needs investigation include DNA, autopsy and postmortem. Government must investigate for the poor souls who can not speak or defend themselves.

2 years imprisonment for 'secretly burying a child', with prosecutions rare, yet death sentence for 'behamte Rasool', or apparent 'blasphemy', very often misused wrongly and prosecuted. And Pakistanis and others worldwide wonder why the country is in such a situation. God have mercy on all children, and others.

@Reem - What you say is right but that is a long term process. Even in the West where contraception, support, awareness and education are available, someone sometimes would leave an unwanted newborn outside a hospital, for example. So, instead of murdering, they could have left them somewhere.
