KARACHI: Additional Inspector General (IG) Sindh Police Ghulam Qadir Thebo said that police on Wednesday had arrested one of the five suspects involved in the murder of Karachi University Dean Dr Shakeel Auj.

Last year in September, Dean of Islamic Studies Faculty at the University of Karachi Dr Shakeel Auj was shot dead in Karachi's Gulshan-i-Iqbal Town. Dr Auj had been shot three times in the neck and chest while driving.

Dr Auj had been associated with KU for 19 years and had been heading the Islamic Studies department since February 1, 2012.

"Five men were involved in the offence and one of them, Mohammad Mansoor, has been arrested," the Additional IG claimed during a press conference.

He said the arrested suspect had not only conceded to his involvement in the murder but had also admitted responsibility for firing on Rangers personnel in 2014.

Further, he said, Mansoor was also responsible for killing renowned poet, writer, scholar and the principal of Degree Science College Liaquatabad Professor Syed Sibte Jafar in 2013, saying that the suspect had made the admission during interrogation.

Professor Jafar was returning home from duty on his motorcycle when gunmen ambushed him.

Thebo went on to add that the suspect had also admitted to killing three members of a political party in 1993.

Unfortunately, he said, Mansoor was a ward boy in Sindh Government Hospital Liaquatabad's Ward No. 10, adding that he had also been working as a motor-mechanic.

He said the suspect claimed to be affiliated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) but 'nobody had come forward to own him'.

The Additional IG said police strived to speed up cases pertaining to the target killings of professors, deans and doctors on a priority basis.
