PESHAWAR: At least two people killed and two others were injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Tirah Valley of Khyber Agency on Saturday.

Official sources told Dawn that the blast occurred in Mazreen post in Narey Baba area of the valley. The dead and injured were said to be peace volunteers of Tauheedul Islam — a pro-government group.

Khyber Agency is included in Pakistan’s seven semi-autonomous regions governed by tribal laws and lies near the Afghan border. The Taliban and other Al Qaeda-linked groups who stage attacks in both Pakistan and Afghanistan are also known to have strongholds in the zone.

Pakistan suffers frequent bomb and suicide attacks blamed on extremist militant groups. Pakistani troops have for years been fighting homegrown armed groups in the tribal belt.
