KARACHI: Debate on rains today

Published September 16, 2003

KARACHI, Sept 15: The Sindh Assembly on Monday admitted six identical adjournment motions moved by the treasury and opposition members for a discussion on the effects of recent rains/flood in Sindh.

As the House gave its unanimous approval on their admissibility, the matter was fixed for Tuesday.

From the opposition side, Nisar Khuhro, Dr Sikandar Ali Mahendro, Mohammed Rafique advocate, Ms Humera Alvani, Shazia Atta Marri and Hameedullah Khan moved their motions whereas a similar one was moved by Senior Minister Syed Sardar Ahmad and all were joined together.

Earlier, during question hour, an unpleasant situation developed when Mohammed Hussain, while presiding over the session, ordered expunging the remarks by PPP’s Mohammed Rafique, who was speaking on a point of order on Thal Canal.

Mr Hussain had not allowed his point of order but the member kept on speaking. Mr Hussain, who indulged in arguments with the opposition members, ordered that the remarks be expunged.

This was resented by a number of opposition members, including Syed Qaim Ali Shah.

However, Mohammed Hussain said that he had given his ruling and that no one could dictate him.

In the meantime, Speaker Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah returned to the House. Provincial minister for Inter-provincial coordination, Nadir Leghari said that the GTC issue had been included in the agenda of the Federal Inter-provincial Coordination Council’s agenda.
